    ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 Links

Dear Guys, i using win10 with gen8 since years, works nice for gaming (with 1030gt nvidia), nas and personal use, but after a reinstall (ssd change) it looks like, became slower. If i remember, last install i found a 'home made' driver pack for win8/win10. Chipset, usb, sata.. Maybe somebody knows it and have? :) thanks!

    Embedded flash HELP

Have you seen the embedded flash error. Controller firmware revision 2.10.00 Embedded media initialization failed due to media write-verify test failure looks like I've lost access to the raid controller configuration page and can't boot media like dvd or USB sticks. But can get into the bios.

  10. Server 2012 Essentials being used for client backups of connected computers. I keep getting an alert warning: A scheduled cleanup task for client computer backup did not finish successfully. I have done the Try to repair. - error not fixed I have manually ran the scheduled task. - error not fixed I have run the client backup tool to repair backups. - does not show errors, and claims to have completed successfully. I'm lost as to what to do next. Chris
  11. Every single machine I have stopped connecting after updating to Win 10 - 1903 I found this site after lots of Google'ing: (It's not English, but Google translates it well) https://sbsland.me/2019/05/24/windows-10-update-1903-und-der-essentials-connector-fix/ which led me to create this registry file: (import to each client, it re-registers services for the connector) 12. I have three servers running Server 2012 Essentials that are being used primarily for client backups of other home computers, with secondary use of file sharing folders. I would like to be able to monitor the devices and health tabs of the dashboard from a single pc. One server has a monitor and I view the dashboard directly, the other two servers are headless HP Mediasmart EX495. To monitor those two servers, I am having to use two Remote Desktop connections. I may also add a Server 2016 Essentials to this mix in the future. I'm hoping for a free or cheap central way to monitor them all from one location. My primary concern is being able to see backup status, windows update status, and view the errors shown on the health tab. Chris

    Graphiccard on G8?

I might be interested in it but I have to make some tests first. I currently have the 1050Ti installed with a Xeon 1220 V2. In a real world scenario you have also to consider that the GPU would be limited by the CPU in our setup.

    Server 2019 upgrade & iLO4

The P600 came today. I've installed it and made all the changes that you mention in this thread. It works with Plex so I'm happy - when you are transcoding in Plex it confirms that it is hardware accelerated. I also found a patch to remove the 2 concurrent encoding limitation. Glad I read this thread now.

  16. Holy necro, What was old is new again. 6 years later this hardware has been chugging along. 6 years, countless moves, multiple states. Over the years ditched ESXi due to overheard/complexity/free license wasn't great. Went back to baremetal and did Windows with Stablebit DrivePool for a number of years. Went Xpenology (SHR2) for a number of years and its stuck. Whats next for this build? Move components into rack mount unit, specifically looking at Norco RPC-4308 Why Norco RPC-4308? I have a rack now, nothing big but its homelab-like Limited depth rack (units need to be >20.5"/550mm) 8 hotswaps on backplane (decision to go M1015 finally will pay off) ATX support when replace with something like Ryzen 3900x Full height slots for potential NVenc card, 10GB, M.2 Card Drive array expanded to 8 bay + 2 SSDs (from 4 bay + 2 SSD) New PSU (650<->850watt) to handle additional 4 drives and future proofing for whatever takes its place Live out the end of its days serving up data from beefier hard drive array (10<->12tb drives, probably 4 disks but maybe 8 depending on black friday sales) Once/if this hardware dies, this chassis will house some nice Ryzen build (3900x/ATX/10Gbe/M.2s) and will likely become a docker host (maybe RancherOS?) . The drive array will be moved into a Synology chassis, probably something like RS1219+ (for short depth), moving storage into an appliance like configuration (I just need/want storage to just mostly be storage at this stage in life).

    SATA controller Failure?

It was the power connector, removed the ODD molex extension/splitter and it booted fine all disks present except for the SSD that was in the ODD tray as it has no power. The connections looked fine but I'll test the extension with a multimeter.

    SATA controller Failure?

+1 on the power. Hopefully it's just a physical connection that worked its way loose. Years ago, I ran into SATA disk I/O disconnect issues from multiple drives. It took days before I figured out that the power supply was the culprit. It was one of those cheap ones that came with the chassis. At least in my case, it was probably due to any of the following; Undervoltage, undercurrent, or dirty (unfiltered) power. I replaced the PSU and to this day, I never saw a single I/O error again.

    SATA controller Failure?

I checked the data cable but didn't think about the power cable. I'll have a look tomorrow.

    SATA controller Failure?

The four drives in the front bays are connected to the system board with a single SFF-8087 cable. Check that connection to be sure it is properly seated properly with no tension side to side. Are the drives in the front bays powering up? Check the power connection to the bays.
  21. I would update iLo and Intelligent Provisioning and the P222 if you are going to use it. The SPP download requires entitlement.

    SATA controller Failure?

I'm running unraid 6.7.2 and I thought I was having disk problems but moving the disks to another PC indicated that it might be a SATA controller problem - it appears to be only picking up the disk in the ODD slot, none of the four disks in the 3.5 bays are being detected at boot. This happened a few weeks and then seemed to fix itself but on a shutdown and reboot tonight it did exactly the same thing. Any ideas? Or is the controller faulty?

    Building PC, need suggestions..

Although dated … this series of articles might give you a few ideas. https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-features/32341-confessions-of-a-10-gbe-network-newbie-part-1-basics I tried to bring the hardware up to date a year or so ago in this thread herein: https://homeservershow.com/forums/topic/16182-converged-10g-home-storage-network/
  24. Thanks for the link! After installing on 5 different USB keys, I finally found one that worked! I was about to give up hope. Is there anything else that you'd recommend that I update as well? Do I need to install the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) Version 2019.03.1 (if so where can I get it) or just the iLo firmware and IP (Not sure what that is). How about the P222?

    Building PC, need suggestions..

What are you using today? Here is a quick run at a DIY build for $1150, I have not checked all the components for compatability: AMD RYZEN 7 3700X 8-Core 3.6 GHz CPU G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Qty 2 32GB Memory ASRock Fatal1ty B450 GAMING-ITX/AC AM4 AMD B450 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 HDMI Mini ITX AMD Motherboard Silicon Power 1TB NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 M.2 2280 TLC R/W up to 3,400/3,000 MB/s SSD Sapphire Radeon PULSE RX 590 8GB GDDR5 PCI-E Dual HDMI / DVI-D / Dual DP w/ Backplate Thermaltake Core V1 Extreme Mini ITX Cube Chassis CORSAIR CX-M Series CX550M 550W 80 PLUS BRONZE Haswell Ready ATX12V & EPS12V Semi-Modular Power Supply Windows 10 Pro 64-bit - OEM Another big question with the type of work you are doing, where do you back up or store your files?
  26. The latest BIOS release for the MS Gen8 is open for anyone to download, CPU issues, even though it shows as entitlement required. This is the USB key version. install Instructions are listed on the download page; https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=MTX_e9bfdf20809a426cb16ef9cd81#tab2 All of the other firmware for iLo and IP, and all of the drivers do not require entitlement. As far as I know there are no capacity limits with the onboard SATA controller or the P222. Depending on the NAS OS you choose, you may want to use a LSI HBA for the NAS drives, so you can passthrough the controller to the NAS VM.
  27. Just bought my first gen8 to build a NAS on CL and I'd like to upgrade the BIOS before upgrading the processor. HP of course requires a maintenance contract to access upgrades, but searching the web I found P03093_001_spp-Gen8.1-SPPGen81.4.iso which I burned to a USB and tried to boot from it, but it doesn't seem bootable. The machine has ESXI installed on it, and I won't want to install windows to run some of the EXE's if possible... Any tips to upgrade all the firmwares etc? What updates should I install? Any instructions anywhere? It does have a HP Smart Array P222/512 FBWC (which I will bypass as I want to use as a NAS) - is there a limit on the HDD size I install in it? Thanks!
  28. Thank you for that insight. I do keep the server running 24x7 for a single reason; hard disk life seems to fare better on an always-on system compared to one that shuts down frequently. My oldest WD Red drive, still with 100% health, is already clocking in at almost 7 years of total uptime. The same drives have only seen an average of 100 to 280 start/stop count in their lifetime. But I digress. I think I'll take WinSvr 2016 with Essentials Role a spin, just for the client backup features.
