    ML350p Gen8 CPU Upgrade

I'm building a VM server for home, trying to keep it under $500, and a tower not rack mount. I had read a great article about this http://jptoto.jp/build-your-own-32-core-home-lab-server/ using 2 @ E5-2670 processors as they are pretty cheap right now. The article listed all the parts and when I priced them out came to about $750. I then found I could get a ML350p Gen 8 w/E5-2609, 32GB Ram for $305. CPU upgrades would be about $110, 2 @ 1TB SATA drives $90. So all about $500. Then researched the CPU upgrade, it seems I have to be concerned that the CPU's should come from an HP machine, firmware issues. As to the drives, they should also be HP drives, again compatibility. Does anyone have any experience on this, or other issues I may run into? There is the possibility of getting a ML350p Gen 8 with 2@E5-2660 for $400, no HD. Would this be better? Thanks for help in advance. MT-Geek

  4. Yup, I've used those in the past. I also like the Icy Dock EZConvert's and have two in my G10 MS.

    ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 Links

New iLO version 4.62 Version:2.62 (2 Apr 2019) Fixes Upgrade Requirement: Recommended - HPE recommends users update to this version at their earliest convenience. Resolved an issue where iLO could intermittently cause adapters to lose configuration after updating adapters to newer firmware. https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5390291&swItemId=MTX_0605845b94a948e19846dd4301&swEnvOid=4184#tab-history
  6. This even happens on the ILO app though, which you can’t configure SSL/TLS for? thanks for the link btw, that will come in handy.
  7. Maybe it has to do with SSL/TLS settings Depending on the browser (not in ILO) your using , you might want the fiddle with the TLS/SSLsettings in the browser. I can't reproduce the issue myself because I use a vpn to access ILO remotely, which I recommend btw. BTW: I use this site to see for updated ILO firmware. He's pretty quick with updates. https://pingtool.org/latest-hp-ilo-firmwares/

can no longer connect to iLo from external?

Looks like iLo4 2.70 firmware has not been released yet.
  10. no luck unfortunately. same issue even after the update. interestingly though, there is mention of an ILO 4 2.70 firmware here, but i cant seem to find any download links for it. https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03334036
  11. New ILO 4 firmware 2.62 is out (2 Apr 2019). You might want to give that a try, you never know. Fix: Resolved an issue where iLO could intermittently cause adapters to lose configuration after updating adapters to newer firmware. https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5390291&swItemId=MTX_0605845b94a948e19846dd4301&swEnvOid=4184

    Add a 6th drive, P222 or not

I have not used Proxmox, so I can only give you ideas on what I have done or things you may want to consider. Do you want to run the drives as AHCI or RAID? ESXi is getting better about working with AHCI, but RAID seems to work better. With ESXi I had a P222 connected to the front four drives running RAID5 or 10 and the B120i cabled to two SSD's in a RAID1. If you want everything in the server on the same controller you could use a P420 and have four drives on one port and two on the other. If Proxmox supports AHCI you could add in a HBA and run all the drives on it. Some configuration questions will relate to what you are trying to achieve. Example: Many users decided to run ESXi on the MS Gen8 and run FreeNAS as a VM. As FreeNAS prefers to manage the drives itself the best way to configure the system was to run the VM's from SSD's on the B120i and add a HBA for the four drive bays. Then passthrough the HBA and drive directly to the FreeNAS VM. Later versions of ESXi have gotten better at passing through individual drives. There are many ways to configure this, but the configuration is very dependant on how you are going to use the system with Proxmox.

My 2 cents... 1) That you have installed the "HPE Gen9plus" version of ESXi on a Microserver Gen8? Correct, using the iso. 2) Do you have responsive SSH access to your ESXi (not using the "Alt + F1" option)? Does your session freeze at all with inputs (login, command inputs, etc)? SSH Full controll. No freeze or lagging. 3) Is the Web UI responsive (etc Creating Datastores or viewing the Datastore File browser, switch between navigation options, etc). Web UI is responsive as normal. Full access and no glitches when browsing and modifying/configuring settings. I use is primarely to connect via remote console in full screen. Works perfectly.
  16. hi all i need some help to understand if this values are correct. i have installed a p222 on my microserver. i have installed ESXi 6.5u2 on it, remove ahci driver and put the old driver for b210i (88). on p222 i configured 2 logical drives, one with a red western digital, the second 3 western digital on raid 5. below a let the config and the benchmark of reading, on the ESXi i have 3 vm machine. openmediavault ubuntu server 14.04 windows server 2012 r2 before i update the windows server the reading was 40MB/S now is 100 MB/s on the red western and the write was almost the same, i have on the pictures below. all the test ware done with only the windows server VM running and the other ones shutdown. the VM openmediavault and windows server are on the western red and the ubuntu server are on the raid 5. the c: drive is the red western digital and the e: drive is the raid 5 The config of the system thank for the helping me if you can Controller on System Board Logical View Physical View Controller Status OK Serial Number N/A Model Dynamic Smart Array B120i Controller Firmware Version 4.50 Controller Type HPE Smart Array Logical Drive 01 Status OK Capacity 111 GiB Fault Tolerance RAID 0 Logical Drive Type Data LUN Encryption Status Not Encrypted -Physical Drive in Port 1I Bay 1 Status OK Serial Number EB98075C10F000916495 Model Patriot Media Type SSD Capacity 120 GB Location Port 1I Bay 1 Firmware Version SAFM12.2 Drive Configuration Configured Encryption Status Not Encrypted Controller on Slot 1 Logical View Physical View Controller Status OK Serial Number PDSXH0BRH6U1CQ Model Smart Array P222 Controller Firmware Version 8.32 Controller Type HPE Smart Array Cache Module Status OK Cache Module Serial Number PBKUA0BRH6U1J9 Cache Module Memory 524288 KB -Logical Drive 01 Status OK Capacity 1862 GiB Fault Tolerance RAID 5 Logical Drive Type Data LUN Encryption Status Not Encrypted -Physical Drive in Port 2I Bay 2 Status OK Serial Number WD-WCAW30727446 Model WDC Media Type HDD Capacity 1000 GB Location Port 2I Bay 2 Firmware Version 00.0NA00 Drive Configuration Configured Encryption Status Not Encrypted -Physical Drive in Port 2I Bay 3 Status OK Serial Number WD-WCAW30720650 Model WDC Media Type HDD Capacity 1000 GB Location Port 2I Bay 3 Firmware Version 00.0NA00 Drive Configuration Configured Encryption Status Not Encrypted § -Physical Drive in Port 2I Bay 4 § Status OK Serial Number WD-WCAW30732015 Model WDC Media Type HDD Capacity 1000 GB Location Port 2I Bay 4 Firmware Version 00.0NA00 Drive Configuration Configured Encryption Status Not Encrypted -Logical Drive 02 Status OK Capacity 1862 GiB Fault Tolerance RAID 0 Logical Drive Type Data LUN Encryption Status Not Encrypted -Physical Drive in Port 2I Bay 1 Status OK Serial Number WD-WCC4M4FX1R5D Model WDC Media Type HDD Capacity 2000 GB Location Port 2I Bay 1 Firmware Version 82.00A82 Drive Configuration Configured Encryption Status Not Encrypted

    Tips for Server 2019 install

What immediate pro's would upgrading to 2019 have, coming from a previous older OS build? I'm running 2012R2 atm, and see no immediate reason to upgrade. rob
  18. How about re-installing the client? I had a kind of similar thing after upgrading one of my Win10 PC's. It looked like it was working, but running a manual backup didn't work. After uninstalling, rebooting, and re-installing the client it worked as expected. And1903 still being a RP, this might also throw a wrench in the system... rob

    RocketRaid 2720 Not Detecting Drives

I see in your top post you list RAID firmware 1.50, If I am looking in the right place HighPoint show latest firmware as v1.16_16_07_06 I would check to be sure you are running the latest firmware and software.

over speakers, using latencymon it goes off the charts when I enable the raid card. When I disable it in the device manager, the problem goes away completely. Fresh install. Willing to buy an new card that supports up to raid 5 and 8 3 tb drives, as long as it has better windows 10 support.

Is the popping sound audible over the sound card/speakers of the PC or is the popping sound physically coming from the RAID card?

Thanks pumek, that is helpful. Can I confirm the following from you with your given install: 1) That you have installed the "HPE Gen9plus" version of ESXi on a Microserver Gen8? 2) Do you have responsive SSH access to your ESXi (not using the "Alt + F1" option)? Does your session freeze at all with inputs (login, command inputs, etc)? 3) Is the Web UI responsive (etc Creating Datastores or viewing the Datastore File browser, switch between navigation options, etc). RocketRaid 2720 Not Detecting Drives

Was a bad power cable. Got her working, but I have a new problem. Massive DPC Latency and audio popping coming from the card. When I disable it in the device manager, issues go away. Enable it, I can use the array but get audio popping. Do you know how to fix this? Or another card which I can buy that has better support for Windows 10?
