    Budget AMD Gaming Build

Fun project to watch take shape! Then, equally important, what games are worth playing these days? Have been so out of gaming for so long!
  9. Just in case it hasn't been reported here, a new system ROM was released on 12 Jun 2019. ** CRITICAL ** Online ROM Flash Component for VMware ESXi - HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 (J06) Servers Version: 2019.04.04(12 Jun 2019)

It's here! I'm trying not to get in a hurry though. The i/o shield on the mobo was the normal silvery aluminum so I have a few coats of black drying on it now. Will see what it looks like tomorrow. I still have yet to settle on a video card. I'll use what I have here first before getting a new one.

    RAM

If I remember correctly, these AMD CPU's reserve about 1G of memory for graphics. I do not think there is a way to change the reserve.

    RAM

My Gen10 with X3216 has one module of 8GB installed. OS is Windows Server 2019. Any idea why it shows me only approx. 6.96GB available RAM in Server Manager (same in properties of System)? Does the GPU (driver?) grab too much of the physical RAM? Any setting in UEFI BIOS that can cause this high RAM assignment to some hardware? (I didn't install any new hardware, except for SSD and HDDs)

Same thing for me with a 4i version in ilo
  15. Yup, great idea. I have docker on one of my units and experimented with it but never followed through with it. It's the perfect spot for the controller as it runs 24/7. I'll give it some more thought as it is really easy to move the AP's with my new script!
  16. Hey Dave, Re the Unifi controller - I created a docker container on my Synology that runs the Controller software. Working well for the last 4 months.

I noticed the reviews, just using it as a place holder for now. For your 1070/1060 issue, I believe there are tools from Nvidia to force a factory BIOS load as well. There was an odd memory issue with 1070's that caused a fork in the BIOS for some models. For the 1TB SSD, do you need 2.5" SATA or M.2 NVMe or SATA? If it is for the gaming build above you have a second M.2 slot for SATA. You could use either of these if you want low cost: Team Group MS30 M.2 2280 1TB SATA III TLC Internal SSD TM8PS7001T0C101 $98 https://www.newegg.com/team-group-ms30-1tb/p/N82E16820331233 Mushkin Enhanced Source M.2 2280 1TB SATA III 3D TLC Internal SSD MKNSSDSR1TB-D8 $104 https://www.newegg.com/mushkin-enhanced-source-1tb/p/N82E16820226888 WD Blue 3D NAND 1TB Internal SSD - SATA III 6Gb/s M.2 2280 Solid State Drive - WDS100T2B0B $110 https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-blue-1tb/p/N82E16820250092 or if you need 2.5" SATA: 960GB start at $83 or 1 TB for $90 Silicon Power Ace A55 2.5" 1TB SATA III 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SU001TBSS3A55S25NE $90 https://www.newegg.com/silicon-power-ace-a55-1tb/p/N82E16820301382

    KB2781272 hotfix download link

Microsoft is being very stupid removing all of the old hotfixes from their websites. They are also wiping out old blogs and thus invalidating many cross-linked articles to those blogs and hotfixes. It is insane. I found a source for KB2781272 on the wayback machine (WWW archive) here: https://web.archive.org/web/20130910201028/http://hotfixv4.microsoft.com/WHS%202011/latest/KB2781272/6.1.8800.16402/free/459525_intl_x64_zip.exe I hope this is helpful to others stuck in the same bind.

Thanks for the feedback. I was close to pulling the trigger on the Silicon Power NVMe PCIe M.2 - https://amzn.to/2IizNKg $115.99 and should have talked to you first! I needed to spend the Fry's card anyway so I'm happy with the 970. I've never really bought top of the line so I'm a bit excited on that purchase! I need to shop for a 1TB SSD now. eBay is still chock full of mining GPU's. I've found great deals on 580's but still a little leery on how they were treated. I treated my cards good but you never know. I've always known this 580 to be the best. Here is a guy moving out his inventory. https://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-RADEON-RX-580-ARMOR-8G-OC-EDITION/372662883584?epid=21026727039&hash=item56c4705500:g:fhAAAOSwkHlcyOl4 They are $205 new. I still have a 1060 3GB card too. It's a junker though. I got it from an Amazon auction and it's actually a 1070 card that thinks it is a 1060. I think someone flashed it wrong and I've tried to recover with no luck. I could always use it but it's pulling extra power I don't want to give it. NewEgg has a better deal on the card I was looking at. The reviews on that ASRock GPU not so good. https://www.newegg.com/msi-radeon-rx-580-rx-580-armor-8g-oc/p/N82E16814137118?Description=MSI RADEON RX 580 ARMOR 8G OC EDITION&cm_re=MSI_RADEON_RX_580_ARMOR_8G_OC_EDITION-_-14-137-118-_-Product

In the podcast you mentioned Ryzen with GPU. I have been considering an affordable gaming build as well. Random thoughts: SSD drives form factor versus interface. M.2 is a form factor, M.2 drives can have a SATA or NVMe (PCIe) interface 2.5" drives can be 5mm, 7mm, 9.5mm, 12.5mm or 15mm in thickness and can have SATA, SAS or NVMe (PCIe U.2 U.3) interface. The Samsung 970 Pro is a great drive, 3500MB/s read and 2700MB/s write. The SP you listed is a great value, 3400MB/s read and 3000MB/s write, 1TB for $115. Most other 1TB M.2 NVMe drives at $100 have 1500MB/s read and 1000MB/s write. I know there is concern buying something other than Samsung, Intel, Crucial, Toshiba, but I have had good luck with SP. As for graphic cards, there had been some really good deals on RX590 8GB and lots of refurb on RX580 and RX570, but I need to do a comparison of bang for the buck, new tech versus last gen. Your build looks good, factoring in stuff you already own and gift card purchases. This is what I have been kicking around: ASRock Fatal1ty X370 Gaming-ITX $110 https://www.newegg.com/asrock-fatal1ty-x370-gaming-itx-ac/p/N82E16813157779 AMD RYZEN 5 2600 6-Core 3.4 GHz $150 https://www.newegg.com/amd-ryzen-5-2600/p/N82E16819113496 CORSAIR Vengeance RGB Pro 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2933 $160 https://www.newegg.com/corsair-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820236479 Silicon Power 1TB NVMe PCIe Gen3x4 M.2 2280 TLC R/W up to 3,400/3,000MB/s SSD (SU001TBP34A80M28AB) $115 https://www.amazon.com/Silicon-Power-Gen3x4-000MB-SU001TBP34A80M28AB/dp/B07L6GF81L/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=SU001TBP34A80M28AB&qid=1560712947&s=gateway&sr=8-1 ASRock Phantom Gaming X Radeon RX 580 DirectX 12 RX580 8G OC 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5 $170 https://www.newegg.com/asrock-radeon-rx-580-rx580-8g-oc/p/N82E16814930002 Metallic Gear Neo Series MG-NE210_BK01 Black Sandblasted Aluminum, Steel Chassis, Tempered Glass Mini-ITX Case $60 https://www.newegg.com/black-metallic-gear-neo-series-mini-itx-case/p/N82E16811861001 SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Active PFC $40 after MIR https://www.newegg.com/seasonic-m12ii-620-bronze-620w/p/N82E16817151095 Total $805 Thoughts?

    Surface Pro 2017 (5)

It's probably time to combine the Pro forums. It used to be pretty simple!
  25. I mentioned on RESET 63 that I was going to build a small gaming PC. Here is my parts list: Case - ThermalTake V21 - https://amzn.to/2KjRLi0 $60 OWN Already SSD/HDD - Samsung 970 Pro 512GB https://amzn.to/2FaJ4Cc . $147.99 Purchased, see below. Mobo - ASROCK MicroATX B450M Pro4 - https://amzn.to/2IYaUTF $75.71 AMD Ryzen 5 2600 - https://amzn.to/2FcUPbt $147.77 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700 - https://amzn.to/2MPUMsc $209.99 RAM Corsair Vengence 2x8GB 3000MHZ - https://amzn.to/2MPxq6k $74.99 or Corsair Vengeance 2x8 3200 LED - https://amzn.to/2KMH7jc $99.99 GPU - Undetermined P/S - I have a 650 modular somewhere in a case. Antec I think. Thoughts and Updates I purchased the Ryzen 7 and the LED Ram. Just a few bucks more for LED's. I also have a Corsair keyboard and mouse so already use the software. I was looking around at LED coolers for the Ryzen 5 and it just made more sense to upgrade the processor to the 7 as it has a LED cooler in it. I was thinking about getting this NVME drive from Amazon. Silicon Power NVMe PCIe M.2 - https://amzn.to/2IizNKg $115.99 I got the Samsung from Fry's Electronics instead. It's local to me and this is literally the only thing in the store worth buying. No Mobo's, no CPU's, but they did have NVIDIA GPU's, but not a selection of Radeon. Just a lonely 570. I had a gift card to Fry's so I needed to use it. I did a price match for the Samsun 970 and used the card. The board is a good budget board. It has a NVMe slot for M.2 so that 970 should see it's full potential. It has an additional M.2 slot but I will probably find a budget 1TB SSD to use for additional storage. I also think I read somewhere that if you use the second M.2 you lose additional SATA ports which that is normal but I forget if it took two SATA ports or not. (remember when we used to put a spinner as the 2nd drive?) Four RAM slots! I'll use two now and maybe fill it up in the future. Probably won't though. Lastly, I have stated in the past that when I build again I'm going to get the best I can get. I want a tricked out Core i7! Well, sometimes the wallet fights back when it comes to actually paying for the gear. I did step it up from a Ryzen 5 to the 7 though. I think this will be a nice build. I'll follow up for sure. Just for grins. Here is my last build. Check out that date! This box is sitting beside me running Windows 10 Pro. Everything has been upgrade except the mobo and the CPU. Everything else was ripped out at some point. Gear has flown through this case and mobo like water through a stream. It has a Radeon RX550 in it now. It has a modified bios and has been OC'd a bit. I may hand it down as a beginner gamer.

    ESXi notes

Found a solution: I had to disable vmw-ahci, (esxcli system module set --enabled=false --module=vmw_ahci), now the local datastores are accessible again and no data lost. I am running two 2 GB Crucial MX500 SSDs and two WD Red Pro 10 GB HDDs. From a Win10 VM, i was testing with thick provisioned VMDKs and got the values as attached. As it is my first HP Gen 8 bought recently, are the values what I should expect?
