  3. Since this is a new drive and a new install, I second reformatting and starting over with a clean slate. Installing Windows 10 on an SSD doesn't take long anyway.

    Windows is activated

Yes. Well, that was easy, unless I'm missing something.

    Windows is activated

When looking at This PC, with the view of basic information about your PC, for Windows activation, when it says, "Windows is activated". I presume that means that it recognized my license for WIndows 10 Pro, after I replaced my old HDD with an SSD, then installed Windows 10 Pro and validated my activation. That I now have a valid license installed on this new SSD. Am I correct?

Have I put the SSD on wrong?

as long as it doesn't block airflow in the case you will be fine. I've attached SSD's with double sided tape to inside and lived

Have I put the SSD on wrong?

wrong is a funny word in this context. is the drive accessible to the cables and not going to shift around? you should be good. sometimes I have been known to have a ssd just 'sitting in there' and I am not afraid because I don't transport my 20 pound pcs.
  9. When I was working on putting the new SSD in, I had got a 3.5 inch to 2.5 inch adapter. However, it wouldn't fit into the hard drive bay. So, still using the adapter I connected it to to frame. Did I do wrong?

Can I just delete the Windows.Old folders?

Windows disk cleanup tool- Clean up system files- Previous Windows installations: Instructions in this guide: https://www.howtogeek.com/223821/what-is-the-windows.old-folder-and-how-do-you-delete-it/

  12. After all the trouble I've gone through just to get it to boot, I'd really rather not format and do a free install. Also running Disk Cleanup, even when I tell it to remove old system files (and it even mentions Windows.Old folders), doesn't remove them. Why is that?

Can I just delete the Windows.Old folders?

Run the disk cleanup wizard, cleanmgr.exe, make sure you untick the Downloads folder tho if you have anything in there. Failing that, format, do a fresh install and go from there
  14. I've been struggling to get Windows 10 installed onto a new SSD I put into my old Dell XPS desktop. I made a bootable USB drive, but it kept going back to the beginning of the process over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. No one told me that you must take the USB drive out. I'm sorry, but I cannot read minds. I didn't know that. Finally, my son found a video on YouTube telling me that. So, at the appropriate time we removed it and FINALLY I was able to complete the process. Now, I've got a HECK of a lot of Windows.Old (x) folders. Can I just get into File Explorer, highlight the bunch and press delete?

ESXi 7.0 and HPE Smart Array S100i

I just got my Gen10 Plus yesterday and realized the S100i SR doesn't support ESXi... Any suggestion of Raid controller for Gen10+? Would like to get a cheap Raid controller instead of getting e208i-p on the official support list which is very pricey...

iLO Remote Console with graphics card added

I'm reliving the post. Well, I have the same option in the BIOS, in the ML110 G9 server, and I want to add the graphic card that indicates the specifications for this server (I don't want an excess of revolutions in the fan because of incorporating other graphic cards). Finally someone checked what is indicated here for the compatibility of both graphic cards? Thank you!

    Gen10+ Anyone got one yet?

What OS are you running on your G10+? Thinking I should repurpose my current WSE12R2 Core i5 for Blue Iris since it supports Intel QuickSync. Prob remove essentials role from it so it’s not a DC and AD controller.

WD Red 2-4-6TB drives could be SMR

Yeah, thanks America for that one...

WD Red 2-4-6TB drives could be SMR

it begins, the lawyers are getting involved ! https://www.tomshardware.com/news/wd-class-action-lawsuit-smr-hard-drive the way this typically works, the lawyers on both sides pocket 90% of the settlement and the users will get a coupon for discounts off future purchases of wd smr drives

WD Red 2-4-6TB drives could be SMR

I see Chris talking about the SSD optimiser, I might give that a go, had been thinking about it before, might carve a chunk out of my boot SSD and see what it does, I could use the VM SSD but that's got 5 VM's sat doing stuff so I suspect there would be more of a performance hit than there would from using the boot drive, I do have a spare 500Gb SSD and some spare channels on my card so could just give it a full drive, undecided..

    Gen10+ Anyone got one yet?

I'm running a Fractal Node 804, I want smaller, so if anything larger capacity drives in a Gen10+ sized unit, stacking them to give 8 drives in a Gen10+ would have been cool at though, anyone got a 3d printer lol

WD Red 2-4-6TB drives could be SMR

I asked that question on covecube's (drivepool) forum last month and Christopher (drashna) covecube's support guru stated that drivepool didn't have a problem with smr drives https://community.covecube.com/index.php?/topic/5252-smr-drives-compatible-with-drivepool/#comment-31379
  23. I had an unrelated remote support call with QNAP (I have 2x RAID1 two-bay NAS). I asked at the end what was their current advice and was told that I should not use WD SMR on any of their products and was pointed to the WD table posted here. Apologies for asking again, but does anybody have a view whether Stablebit SSD Optimiser cache would help with using SMR drives?

@jackoUK ironically I've running an older Fractal Define XL full tower case now from way back. It's gone thru a series of phases with 8 x 3 TB WD Reds in RAID5. Currently running an Intel Ivy Bridge Core i5-3570K with 32 GB RAM and WSE12R2 (Essentials). Mostly used for Windows client backups, file server storage, Plex Media Server (direct, no remote transcoding) and Blue Iris for IP cameras and a couple Hyper-V VMs for some simple utility tasks, testing, etc. It takes up quite a bit of room in a closet, uses more power than it should and, as such, gives off some heat and isn't silent. My motivation for moving to a HPE Gen10 Plus is entirely the opposite -- to shrink the footprint, reduce noise and power consumption and finally get ILO. Tired of running up and down stairs handling the server box; looking forward to not doing that anymore. Am still leaning toward Windows Server 2016 Essentials since it's newer, based on Win10 and contains the client backup feature I've used (not sure whether client backup history can be migrated from WSE12R2 to WSE16?). WSE19 has been stripped of any real home benefit for me.

Most likely HP have judged the business market for small servers correctly ... but I think enthusiasts are looking for something bigger: at least 8 data bays, NVME OS/APP. drive and 10G networking. I can see some options for very large DIY storage builds materialising soon. 1. On the INTEL front the ASUS ProArt Z490 Creator motherboard has both Thunderbolt and 10G features, combine that with a low power CPU such as the 6 core i5-10500T (also providing graphics) and one has a good base for an 8 or 16 data disk storage server. 2. The ASROCK X470D4U2-2T motherboard is a possibility too. No Thunderbolt but a RYZEN 5 2400G CPU might do the trick. Better still if we could use the rumoured Ryzen 7 4000 series CPU's with 6 and 8 cores (will they be OEM only chips?). 3. Those two options will require one or two 8 port HBA's to service the data drives but for an even bigger base something like the GIGABYTE MZ01-CE0 motherboard with inbuilt 16 SATA ports and an EPYC 7252 CPU. Getting expensive now! My interest in such large builds has been stimulated by Fractal Design's new case, the Define 7 XL. https://www.fractal-design.com/products/cases/define/define-7-xl/black/ One look at the graphics with all those disks and I knew at once how I was going to replace my existing 4 HP Microservers!
