Ready to Upgrade My Synology Box

If you stream video or transcode look at the 1019 a little harder. If you need maximum bays it can always take an add on expansion bay. The 1618 will also expand and I would look at it if you need more storage now and don't need the horsepower that the 1019 and NVME slots provide. Although, the 1618 is no slouch! Look at the 1819 if you need more storage up front. Always a "+" system. I almost never recommend NON + system anymore. Whatever you choose you will love. They are all good boxes and will do mostly the same for most folks. There are outliers that need the extra stuff every now and then. Docker, NVME, tons of transcoding, etc. Don't forget it comes with two surveillance station licenses for cameras! Some folks like to go with more bays just so they can create a volume on 4 drives for data and maybe a mirror or a single drive just for Surveillance Station to use.

Ready to Upgrade My Synology Box

I have the 1019+ and it is a power house. I've not filled the NVME slots as I'm not doing anything that would take advantage of them. NAS and streaming use don't really use them as best as would virtualization or file transfers within the NAS itself. It's the beefiest Synology i've ever used for sure.

Ready to Upgrade My Synology Box

Hey Ed, That's a good box for sure. https://www.synology.com/en-us/products?bays=5%2C6%2C8&chassis=Desktop https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/compare/DS1019+/DS1618+/DS1819+ I've filled in a few comparison URL's if anyone is interested. It all depends on what you want to do with the box as to which is better for you. Strictly NAS? Docker? Virtualization? Surveillance? Streaming? I threw in the 1019+ and it's one drive bay smaller but it has a little more power to it. If you want to do all the above you may consider it.

    Ransomware attack plan

How long is a piece of string? at work I have deployed VEEAM infrastructure (just like 90% of people) that backs up not via SMB but directly. It has multiple snapshots on some replica's of highly important servers, and multiple backups 21 daily Weekly active full's backups Long Term Storage via iSCSI( so it is vulnerable to attack there but they actually have to get access to the server) Daily's for 1 week 5 weekly's 4 Monthly's 5 Quarterly's 8 Yearly's Offsite 15 Days Home I have a similar system Daily PC backups VEEAM Agent for Windows Time Machine for Mac Data Sync'd to NAS Websites Downloaded via scripts to Local Storage NAS Syncs to 2x Offsite 2 Disk NAS' (Mirrored Drives) at two different sites, each store's 8TB OneDrive (each user's one drive is Mirrored to the NAS) Backblaze B2 (Selected this one as I can order a disk with all the data on it unlike many of the other providers) USB HDD This has a TP-Link Kasa plug that turns off and on as required, the Synology ejects the disk once it completes the backup and the plug turns off at a pre-determined time, it turns on about 30 minutes before the backup is due to start so the disk is physically off most of the time. I would like to have it so the Synology sends a command to the switch (lets say 5 minutes) before the backup job starts (could use a wait command) that turns it on, and then another that runs after the job is complete to turn it off but I have not worked this one out yet and Synology have been no help, they just do not seem to be able to grasp the concept of what I want to happen or that I want to run pre-processing and post-process jobs Servers are backed up via VEEAM Now I have a better link I may send these off to the offsite backups above

Ready to Upgrade My Synology Box

Well it is finally time for me to upgrade my Synology that I won at one of the meetups. I am considering the below Synology NAS. Synology 6 Bay NAS DiskStation - DS1618+ (Diskless) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CR8RZYY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_1P8mDbKW0G5WD I am considering six of the below hard drives. Seagate IronWolf Pro 4TB NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD - 3.5 Inch SATA 6Gb/s 7200 RPM 128MB Cache for RAID Network Attached Storage, Data Recovery Service - Frustration Free Packaging (ST4000NEZ025) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H2FPFW5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_wk8mDbGFQMM2H What do you all think?

    Can N54L run Hyper-V 2019?

Got rid of mine so can't confirm, I know there was trouble running VMWare 6.something though due to the CPU not having certain instructions or something, not sure if Hyper-V is the same.

    HP Proliant ML350p G8 Watercooling!

Ryan, Thank you for that! What I currently have completed is stripping the two ground and the one PWM wire (from a 4 pin sata power cable with the same color layout that plugs snugly into the female socket ignoring the blue frequency wire. Didn't want to cut any wires on the fan chassis just in case it didn't work) and put a twist on wire connector on the ends with shrink tube holding all 3 wires together. Did this to the first fan in the assembly and tested it with FAN1 removed and everything is working as expected! One thing I do not understand is how the PWM signal is being spoofed with no hardware/software manipulation and checking the speed of FAN1 via SpeedFan, the RPM of FAN1 is the same as all the other fans (just curious). 😐 Never the less I will be working on this further over the weekend, installing four new 2500 RPM fans at 31 dB (Scythe DFS922512M-PWM) and creating a custom fan shroud in order to have the two fans in the middle push air directly through the CPU's for better temps. A type of wind tunnel effect. I have heavy heat temp graded thin plastic that should work perfectly for the design. Hopefully that will keep things cool. Will do a couple monitored stress tests in order to make sure that the fans can handle the workload. Will keep you posted with photos. Thank you!

    HP Proliant ML350p G8 Watercooling!

Hi Denis, You are indeed right the ML will not post with anything other than the stock delta fans as I tried to swap them first with no success as it would shut down instantly with fan errors. The ML delta fans are actually 5 pin using a dual ground for fan detection. I'm using a Corsair Commander Pro fan controller which uses sata power and USB for PWM control via the Corsair LINK drivers. To make the ML work with no fans you have to fool it into thinking it has original fans I did this by spending a few days testing how the system detects fan speed. The ML has 4 fan bays and for each of these bays you need to cut both black ground wires on the back of the plug and connect them together and then also cut the yellow signal wire and simply connect it to any piece of bare chassis, I used the small metal prongs holding down the wires in the fan cage. You can then use the Corsair or any fan controller to power your new fans. If you have any questions or if I didn't explain it well enough please shout Ryan.

    HP Proliant ML350p G8 Watercooling!

Hey Ryan, Very nice setup! Looks efficient in regards to CPU cooling. I'm working on a ML350P G8 as well and just ordered myself 4 2,500 RPM that will replace the loud deltas in the fan housing (same size with 4 pin, PWM support). Question. How did you wire the Noctua NH-U9DX i4 fans in order to work with the mobo properly without getting any post fan faults? I'm under the impression during boot/post the fans ramp up to 50% (5,500 rpm and slow down after OS boot) and with most fans that run slower that 5,000 RPM the mobo will spit out errors and will go into thermal shutdown thinking the fans are faulty. Please correct me if this is not the case. Much appreciated. Thank you. -Denis K-

    E3-1260L upgrade

Hello @stone, I have the KTH-PL316E/8G, and despite being 1600MHz, it is operating at near 1000MHz. I have the E3-1260L operating in the Gen 8 for over 1 year now. Haven't seen any problems with the hardware. So for my build, the memory is working just fine

    HP Proliant ML350p G8 Watercooling!

Hi all, We decided to go a different route with the ML350 and picked up a set of Noctua NH-U9DX i4 coolers which come with the correct mounting hardware for 2011 Narrow ILM. These have proven to be even better than water-cooling in this chassis as they create airflow and direct all the warm air out the back of the chassis. We are planning on adding a few 92mm noctua fans in the existing fan cage to help cool the ram and graphics but as it stands it works perfectly.

    BIOS Update Question

I have three Proliant DL306e servers we are bringing back online running Windows Server 2016. The servers have been mothballed for a few years. The ROM date on each is 2-10-14. I downloaded and ran SPP 8.1 successfully on the first server, but it only update the System ROM date to 8-14-14. Ran it a second time - no change. Here's my question: What's the best way for me to make sure that the BIOS and drivers are all current? I found a BIOS update for Gen8 dated 5-24-19. Are HPE BIOS updates cumulative? Thanks bam
