Proxmox LSI SAS card passthrough error

Hi flipper, Did you ever find a solution?
  3. This does not seem to work with MicroServer Gen8 unfortunately... Has anyone got HBA PCIe Passthrough working on MicroServer Gen8?

    Gen10+ Anyone got one yet?

I'm going to start putting money aside to do a build for my new home server in December. I'll be going for the base model putting in an E-2246G, 64GB RAM and transferring my drives over from my Gen8 before probably offloading my two Gen8s but I'll keep my ML110 G7 as my backup as its got my LTO drive.

Active CPU cooling for the Gen8

Can you remove the tray from the Gen8 and power it up outside of the chassis? Looks like you have a lot of compound on there, I'd clean everything up and reapply with a smaller amount of compound. Also, as you have 2 screws, make sure its not bent or resting on other components around the socket and that you are getting decent contact. The joys of the HP 65w cooler are it fits, its not cheap though, I paid ~£90 for mine IIRC. and it was a PITA to get hold of..

Hi @radaxian and @Trig0r Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm not sure what you mean. Fans are spinning (always 100% on because of how I connected the fan) and yes in the right direction I believe (air is being directed down towards the chipset). Here are the pics of the cooler. Because of the non standard form of the screws I can use only 2 out of the 4 and removed one screw hole to make it fit, exactly as @overcoat did in the first posts. Again though, his temps differ very much from mines. The temps I get are consistent. Over 90 °C passing 2-3 mins of transcoding.
  7. At the moment I have one on back order from hardware.com, but might edge my bets and order from a few different places and see who comes through first. I saw the one on eBay for £120, what a chancer!
  8. Exacly the same thing here... thinking I might just order a couple from Bechtle or Insight and just wait it out 🤔

Hi Radaxian, According the inverted PWM signal, it shouldnt be so difficult. I found one hint on the internet and put it on this thread: It is the last reply from me. It looks like the chip itself is able to invert the signal. I ordered already the chip so I am only waiting when it arrives to try it. I hope that it will work. Then it definitely solve the issue with added another fans. Many thaanks.

Problem HP P410 Array Card in Microserver N54L

Thanks for the reply. Yes one card has a battery and the second has not. Both perform with the same result.

Can I ask a simple question? Did you remove and replace the thermal paste? It needs to be fresh paste and spread thinly over the whole flat metal area. The screws should squash it down and spread it out but a quick visual check will let you know if the paste is making good contact to both the CPU and heatsink. The ILO temp sensor is slow to respond and seems a bit innacurate from my use. Core Temp seems more accurate with the chipset in this Gen8 HWMonitor is ok and should read the same as Core Temp

That's becuase the HP Microservers don't use a standardized PWM signal... it's basically inverted. So a 3rd party fan like a Noctua will actually slow down when the PWM signal increases as it's expecting an oposite waveform. It's been discussed on this forum before and on external sites. You ca convert the signal but it's far more complex that simply wiring in the PWM and Signal wires to the correct pins. My advice is to keep the rear Delta fan in place as it works fine and isn't that noisy when running slow. CPU fan - Whichever you choose just manually run it off 12v but use a common Noctua low speed adapter which dramatically cuts the RPM. My CPU fan spins at about 50% 24/7 and is nice n quiet and also does a great job of active cooling the stock heatsink with a 1270 v2.

You able to power the board up on the tray out of the chassis, are you sure the fans spinning, also, is it spinning in the right direction. Personally I'd take the akasa off of the CPU and see what state the thermal compound is in, you'll be able to see straight off if you have a decent contact between CPU and heatsink.
  19. I have a Supermicro X9DRL-7F mobo which I want to set up in RAID 0 using 2 Silicone Power Ace A55 SSD Sata III drives. When I go into the BIOS to set them up it says they are non-raid disks. Is there any way to convert them to RAID disks? Thanks, Skip

Active CPU cooling for the Gen8

Thank you for replying to me. Indeed, that is what made me move carefully in the first place. I don't want to damage the CPU. I did not know about the HP 65W heat sink, though it seems to cost quite a bit and having the Akasa in place I would like to try to solve this issue with what I have now, but I will buy that if things do not get better, thank you for mentioning that. I have now checked the temps via the iLO interface and this are the readings after 5 minutes of 100% load and after 2 mins of idle. In the right screen you see HWmonitor via remote desktop on the server. However, other monitoring software showed the same readings as HWmonitor (the first thing I thought about was a bad reading). Who should I trust?
  21. I have a problem which I've been chasing for a number of days, and hope somebody can shed a bit of light on it. I have an HP MicroServer N54L and I tried to add the HP Smart Array P410 card. The server is running the O41 10/01/2013 bios update and the P410 is running the 6.64 firmware. I installed the card in slot 1 and on startup the card is detected and initialized. In the amount of time it takes to open the BIOS configuration, set the boot order and allow the system to save and restart, the card is no longer detected and the boot fails. When the card is detected and initialized the ORCA can be entered and volumes created successfully. A work around is to boot from cold, enter the BIOS and set the boot order then save, allowing the system to self shut down but powering off before it tries to restart. Power the system about a minute later and the card is initialized as normal and the boot progresses to the array volume. This will continue running correctly. The problem then arises if you try to restart the system as the array card is lost and the boot order changes again. To rule out a faulty card I have experimented with two similar cards on different and same firmware with the same results. Temperature I hear you say! yes I thought of that. The cards run hot anyway and I've tried them in a standard mini tower running Windows 7. They perform as expected in this configuration. I strapped a small fan on the controller heat sink getting its temp down to the high 20's. Unfortunately this didn't change its behaviour. The 512 ram was also running hot so I tried a second fan pushing air down the left side of the motherboard. I also removed the ram running it without but again no changes to behaviour. And here I'm stuck hoping someone can throw a bit of light on it.

Thats pretty hot that is.. Are you sure the cooler is actually seated properly on the CPU? There is a better HP heatsink thats rated at 65w which is near on the 69w that ARK says your CPU is, but if you've already swapped to the Akasa unit something's gone wrong somewhere to hit those temps, IMHO...

Active CPU cooling for the Gen8

Hi all Sorry to bother replying to an old thread, I hope some of you might be able to help me out. I hae just upgraded the pu in my miroserver gen8 to a E3-1240V2 (I am running Plex and need transoding). I also added the akasa active cooler, I'm running that through the unused Berg connector (it's always at 100% but I don't mind, I don't like it moving with the temperature sensor in case as it's far from the cpu and it might trigger fans too late). However, my temps are nower near what you have there. Max was after 3 mins of 100% cpu transcoding 4K to 320p. Any suggestions? Thank you all for any advice you may want to give me :)

ODD booting with AHCI and OS Upgrading

I managed to install the XEON and the SSD256gb, Windows 10 also installed flawlessly. ( AHCI mode) As expected when inserting my 4 x 4TB Western Digital drives...the machine cannot get to WIN10. The usb boot stick working for years with windows7 is not helping anymore. 😞 I will try to follow again the instructions and prepare it again for WIN10.....any other solutions?

    Replacing SSD OS in Gen8

I didnt unfortunately. i ended up pushing forward and sacrificed 120gigs just to get the fix moving. got some time again so going to continue to investigate further. At least i got my server up and running again

Which backup app for Gen8 + Win 10

no, I'd have to look at their stuff pretty carefully to see the implications of those techniques on recovery time for full and partial restorations. I will probably do that exercise at some time in the future like when I ditch Essentials.
