Whats the last SPP for the Gen8?

The latest SPP with updates is very old, but there are updates for different components (ILO, BIOS, Drivers). SPP2017040 - is the latest iso for Gen7 and 8.

    Upgrade time?

Thanks. I was leaning towards new (more 🙂 ) equipment, it can be set up first, and then stuff moved across, as you say hopefully less chance of accidents. I found a 6 month old (apparently used for demo) ML30 G10 on ebay for just over £600, had 32GB ram, and 2 256GB SSD's, so decided to go for it. The base model new was about the same price, so getting a faster cpu and the extra ram and disks. Just have to hope I can register it ok on the HP site to be able to get Service Packs etc. Haven't really thought about network update yet, thought the faster stuff was still quite expensive. That server you are thinking of building looks good, that seems one hell of a pc case to take that many disks.

    Upgrade time?

I strongly prefer new equipment to keep up with performance and new standards. For example my old HP Microservers cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 Pro and the machines are feeling increasingly sluggish. Something you did not mention: networking. Time to move up to 5G or 10G and Thunderbolt 4. Like the idea of introducing a new server while the old is still available too - no worries about accidents 😞 All Tier1 servers good ... worth looking at DELL's Outlet Store for some bargains if you are patient. I'm inclined to a DIY build e.g. Converged 10G Home Storage Network - Critique my Build List - RESET Forums (homeservershow.com)

    Upgrade time?

I have the following for home use / lab: Microserver Gen 8 - Brought Nov 14 - G1610T - 16GB Ram - 2012R2 ML10V2 - Brought Nov 15 - E3-1271 v3 - 32GB Ram - 2012R2 The ML10V2 has 4 HD's in the main cage for data, 4 SSD's in a cage in the 5 1/4 DVD area for VM's and data, all 8 running of a flashed IBM M1015, and also 2 SSDs just at the back of the 5 1/4 DVD area in Raid 1 running of the B120i for OS boot. The Microserver Gen8 in the 4 bay cage has a SSD for boot, another SSD for VM data, 2 HD's for data, and a 2 1/2 HD in optical area for data. The ML10V2 is the "main" server, and Microserver Gen 8 the "backup" server. They both run Windows 2012R2, with Hyper-v installed. I run a selection of VM's for my weather station, Wi-FI controller, AD, Plex, BlueIris (CCTV) and Exchange, and others that I use here and there for testing. Some of the Vm's are replicated from the main to backup server. This is for backup, and to allow the vm to be started on the backup server while the main is taken down for maintenance / reboot. My data is also replicated from the main to backup server, and I also copy data to portable HD's for further backup. Some of the VM servers are 2016, but most are 2012R2 and the exchange is 2008R2. I installed exchange many years ago (2003 I think, though currently use exchange 2010) for testing, and this was before mainstream providers like google took off, and I started using it for phone active sync (again before this took off mainstream), and I have just carried on using it. Though everything seems to be running ok, wondering if its time to start thinking about upgrading. The servers are nearly 6 and 7 years old, and think the OS on them could do with updating. I have some server 2016 keys I can use (from working in IT), but could also maybe get some 2019 keys. I could just go with rebuilding one of the servers, and then the other, but am wondering if a new server to replace the Microserver Gen 8 may be also be a better idea, then I can build a new server up from scratch, swap stuff over from the ML10V2, make the new server the main, then rebuild the ML10V2 as the backup. I am used to HP servers (as worked with them), and looking around it seems the current tower servers are ML30 Gen10 or ML110 Gen10, though looks like they are several years old, and haven't really looked into what the difference is between them. I see there is a Microserver Gen10 (and plus), but don't think that will have the space in it for the disks I use for the main server. Are there any other good choices for tower servers, I know there are Dell and Fujitsu, but not had much (any) experience with them. What are people choosing / using these days. Also need to decide what I do about the exchange server. Not sure I really need to host my own these days, but I still want iPhone (active sync) email, and to not have to change email address's (i.e I would need to point / use my own domain name). Again, what do other people use, are there any good freeware / linux solutions these days, and what about using 3rd party hosted (exchange) email. Thanks.

    HP Proliant ML350p G8 Watercooling!

Just reporting back to say that I've successfully quietened my ML350p thanks to the advice given here. I decided to remove the whole fan cage and bridged the relevant connections on the little PCB rather than fiddling with the fan connectors. I didn't bother adding a grounding strap to the chassis like XeonUnicorn, but might do that later on. As others have mentioned, I had to remove the CPU retaining clamps to get the coolers to sit flush. This probably isn't ideal as the coolers are now the only thing holding the CPUs in place, but as this is just a homelab project I can live with it. For the time being, I'm running the fans from a cheap fan splitter board that takes a SATA power supply. At some point I plan on adding some more case fans and an arduino based fan controller, possibly afancontrol (https://afancontrol.readthedocs.io). I ran the server with the lid off for a little bit while testing a GPU and managed to trigger a thermal shutdown due to the HD controller hitting 100C. It's ok with the lid on however, sugessting the noctua coolers do provide adequate airfolw through the chassis. After replacing the CPU coolers, I realised that the power supply fans actually make quite a bit of noise too, so I replaced those with Noctua fans and now I finally have the server at an acceptable noise level. The colour coding on my PSU fans was different to that mentioned by ook4mi earlier in this thread. I checked the pinout with an oscilloscope and the tachometer wire was white on mine IIRC.

    Update on My Gen 8

Its mainly a media server it doesnt matter what drive they are on plex knows where they are this way only the drive in use gets spun up instead of a whole array for a single file e.g. to save power It all closed up the fans are normally at something like 11% but its 32°C atm here so the fan is at 40% The drives are a tad warm but they should spin down soon i rebooted it about 40 mins ago and its on a 60 min spindown window edit actually the hottest drives are in the sas enclosure

Do you keep the server ‘open’ like that without casing? I would imagine it would get quite toasty even with the extra fans, if closed…

    Still Using WHS 2011?

Yeah, I gave up on using WHS 2011 on the old RevoCenter. I don't know enough about networking to lock 'er down tight. I'm going to add another external box with 4 drives to my N40L which is running Windows 10 and do the backups there. Putting the RevoCenter (new other than installing 10 years of Windows Updates) on eBay/Kijiji/FB Marketplace. I'll take a look at FreeNas and OpenMediaVault - but assuming they are more of a NAS solution only? I currently have DrivePool & Scanner setup on N40L. Really liking how that's working.

Whats the last SPP for the Gen8?

I believe you can only download this with the registration (valid support subscription/entitlement or whatever they call it), but the individual updates can be downloaded without it. Check the HPE support site…

    SettIng up FTP?

Unable to open port 21 for FTP. install FTP Server Windows 10 Setup: I have a remote location running a web cam server. I had an old homebrew AMD64 PC running Windows 7 that I had set up and everything worked well. The web server used nginx and I had five cameras on the web site page. I had Filezilla FTP Server running and was able to FTP the server to upload and download files from a couple of off site Pcs. (Linux Ubuntu desktop with Fillzilla Client and a Windows 8 laptop with Core FTP LE Client) A couple of weeks ago we had a heavy wet spring snow storm which caused massive power outages. Three days later with power restored I booted the server and it went to boot repair. Long story short, the HDD was flaky and dying. So I bought a Optiplex 2070 and began rebuilding the server. The server is in a remote location with cable ISP to MODEM, cat5 to a Linksys EA2700 running DD-WRT, and cat5 to the server. The server is a Dell Optiplex 7020 running a fresh load of Windows 7 Pro and updates. (Thanks to Windows Seven on how to do the updates). Web software is nginx 1.17.10 and is running well. I can use Remote Desktop to connect to the server from my Ubuntu desktop and the Windows 8 laptop. The router has Port Forward set for the web server, Remote Desktop, and a web cam wired through a router port. Here is the problem: I am unable to connect to the server using FTP. I have scoured the net for three days trying to find out why I can not connect with no luck. I have tried: Forwarded router ports 21, 990, 50000 – 51000. FTP with and without TLS. Set access through Windows firewall – no luck. Disabled Windows firewall – no luck. Verified clients OK by FTP to other sites. Verified FTP and Filezilla are enabled in Widows firewall advanced settings. Checked open ports with “Canyouseeme.org”, ports show open for Web and Desktop, port 21 FAILS. Deleted and reinstalled Flezilla. Tried different FTP and loaded Quick&EasyFTP. Example of Client error: note – port xxx21 is forwarded to port 21 on the server. Resolving xxxxxx.xxxxxx.com... Connect socket #1172 to xxx.xxx.xxx.169, port xxx21... Can't establish connection --> xxxxxx.xxxxxx.com:xxx21 @ Wed May 06 14:04:56 2020 (0-5) Connection Failed Tried telnet to the server on port 21 and it also fails. Is there something simple I overlooked? Any help would be appreciated.

    Still Using WHS 2011?

to be fair, most of us have moved on from WHS2011 many years ago - so its sort of a dead topic around here I think if you know what you are doing and set it up well - you could still use WHS as an internal server safely This is more of a question on your network/router setup and making sure that the WHS2011 box is truly protected from the dark side of the web going forward, have you considered switching over to an alternative like FreeNas or openmediavault ? both are free and kept reasonably up to date. there is also a lot of love on this forum for the unraid server , which does cost a small amount for home use

    Sans Digital Power Supply Issues

I Powered down my Sans Digital TowerRAID TR4X+B 4 Bay SAS Enclosure earlier as i was adding some drives to the Microserver Gen8 when i was finished i turned the TR4X+B back on to nothing at first i presumed the switch on the back was dodgy but its fine anyway i have found a temp workaround to power it back up Power it on for a few seconds (to nothing) then turn the power switch off on the back around 10 seconds after turning the power switch off the power lights will come on and fan will spin for around 1/3 of a second the moment it lights up switch the power switch back to on and it will stay powered up would love to know if anyone ever fixed the psu as at some point i am going to have to fix it the is the first time its been powered off in around 4 years..

    HPE MS gen8 as router

I plan to use HPE as router with pfsense as VM on Proxmox https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/recipes/virtualize-proxmox-ve.htmlhttps://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/recipes/virtualize-proxmox-ve.html it require to have 3 LAN ports, HPE have 2xLAN + ILO4, is there a way to use ILO 1Gb as LAN3? what are recommended 4xLAN 1Gb card for HPE MS gen8? will HP NC365T work?
  26. And does anyone have a copy My little old Gen8 with Win2012R2 has chugged away for years happily doing its thing, figure Im probably long overdue to chuck some updates on there. Cheers Fin.

    HP Proliant ML350p G8 Watercooling!

Hello All, I've also recently purchased an ml350p. My background is electrical industrial instrumentation and control; not really a PC guy... yet. I'm working on it lol. My first job was getting my GPU to work. Struggled to find consensus or a well explained pinout with regards to using consumer GPU cards in these machines. I couldn't find the the OEM cable anywhere. It took me some time to get it working. My issue turned out to be power related. So, for other noobs getting scared off doing this like I almost was, here's what I have confirmed, using a Fluke 789: (for reference) Normal PCIe8 pinout: Pins 1,2,3 are +12V Pins 5,7,8 are 0V (GND) Pin 4 (Sense 8 pin plug) 0V (GND) Pin 6 (Sense 6 pin plug) 0V (GND) (what I found) HP PCIe Pinout (when compared to the above, using the same pin numbers) Pins 1,2,3,4 are +12V Pins 5,7,8 are 0V (GND) Pin 6 (Sense) 0V (GND) I have found references on reddit and other forums indicating that Pin 3 in unused, and its position is shifted to Pin 4. My tests show it at 12V, I'm not sure if there are some smarts in the machine that can switch this pin? Maybe mine is not standard? Consensus is that Pins 1-4 should be at 12V and Pins 5-8 at 0V or GND. I can confirm that my 6GB GTX Titan works with this mod. I modified a standard PCIe 8 to 8+6 cable by leaving the GPU side as per normal and changing the mobo side to what HP expects. I had to make a custom cable since the mine was not long enough. So I only ended up using the plugs really, I tried to remove as much of the original cable as possible, it seemed like sh** cable. Since I work in the industrial sector I used what I had access to, which was 1mm marine grade flex https://www.firstflex.co.nz/product/mst001-0/ I made it 450mm long and it was a comfortable fit. If I were to make it again, I would increase the length to 500mm for looming purposes. Next I will be working of fans. Thing sounds like an aircraft; my wife was suitably unimpressed when i brought it inside. I would like to make use of the original connectors, fan cage etc, if I can, and modify as little as possible. Maybe make a custom PCB to invert the PWM and add some current limiting for ordinary fans. If i got into full mod mode, I have a ABB commander 350 in the garage somewhere, might look cool mounted inside the unused drive bay. I have also started soldering up a custom water-block from some busbar plate I have around the place, I'll use Swagelok fittings and 1/2" Teflon tube. MPa rated, so should be fine for this pressure range ha ha. Still not figured out how to mount everything yet. Got a million other projects on so we'll see how long it takes me to get round to finishing this one. StretchNZ if you're about mate, would be nice to chat about your machine. I live in Auckland. -Jim
