Unsuccessful Client Backup

One client running 8.1 showed incomplete backup and the next day unsuccessful. I rebooted the client and checked the c: drive as only 20% full and tried a manual backup. No go. I then (following MS suggestion) initiated a chkdsk/f/r on the client C:. It progressed to 10% in about 10 minutes but has stayed there for the last 2 hours. How long should I leave chkdsk running on a WIN8.1 before doing something and what should that something be?

The C: is the only drive in the client and is a WD 1TB as I recall. The client seems to have been running fine as far as the owner is concerned.

Update:

Went into town for lunch. Returned 5 hours later (long lunch). chkdsk had finished. Retryed Manual backup. Completed in < 10 minutes.

I thought the same thing when running chkdsk on an extremely damaged disk. Gave up several times. I finally ran chkdsk from a windows command prompt. I was then able to see chkdsk progress and allowed it to finish.
