Safe Havens for Windows Phone Refugees

About a year ago,  I finally had to give up my Lumia 900 cell phone -   loved the hardware but Windows Phone 7  increasingly starting getting long in the tooth.

Key applications, such as my Yahoo mail client weren't being updated.

It also lacked some key features -    Why on earth would Microsoft release a phone that couldn't browse a local windows network ?

Did not want an apple phone  nor did I want to get a phone on contract

my initial experience was with a "LG G3 Vigor"  which I was able to get for 200 bucks unlocked.

its an less expensive version of the highly regarded "LG G3" but at a third the cost.  ( plastic case, less memory, less powerful CPU)

Loved the phone -  got to love android.

its the operating system that the old windows mobile should have evolved to.

However,  I wanted a phone with a bit more horsepower  and my daughter need a new phone......

so I sprung for a unlocked 32 gig  Amazon Fire Phone for $179 bucks two weeks ago.

Very impressed and satisfied.     Roughly same form factor and specs as a Iphone 6

but after factoring out the year of "free" Amazon Prime , it came to 80 bucks completely unlocked.

The fire phone has a reputation for  a quirky interface and dearth of apps -   But I found them to be easily worked around

about 10 minutes of configuration turned it into a relatively simple android phone  -  disabling dynamic perspective  and what not.

The app situation was also not a deal breaker.     If you look at the top 50 apps,  I estimate  that Amazon supports   40-45 out of the box

For the apps that werent  available thru the Amazon Store -  most are easily side loaded. Especially if you have access to a android device

1st   enable side loading of apps on the fire phone

2nd   on a Android device -   use a program like "AppExtractor"   to copy the desired APK files.   I copied them directly into my OneDrive Storage.

3rd    On the Fire Phone -  just  open up onedrive and download the APK  -  should automatically install.

The only APKs for which the procedure did not work seemed to be tied into a specific account on the Android device.

So I could not get "MS OFFICE for Android"  or  Google Docs programs to work.

Its interesting that the programs such as  "Microsoft Remote Desktop" and the Chrome Browser do work !!

Phones are a bit of a lost cause on me at the mo, I'm running the preview WP10 on my 920, other than it eating the battery theres very little that interests me on the phone front, we use Apple at work and I've had Android in the past, if anything I want something with the specs of the 920 but in a smaller form factor, I have my iPad Mini, Venue8Pro etc for smaller screened media consumption and the odd bit of web browsing, the Surface Pro 3 for my main work rig and then my PC at home but nobody seems to understand that some people want a decent spec but small screen, cant just be me surely..

Regardless of whether you have built your WHS or it arrived all in one piece there are certain steps you should take to get up and running with Windows Home Server.  This is not a step by step guide to installation.  They are all different.  This is more like Cliff Notes.  It's the stuff you need to know before you get started and some tips and tricks before, during, and after installation.  I will publish a check list or a cheat sheet list to go along with this podcast.

If anyone has a windows phone, I would suggest you check out the WP Outsiders app. It is a community app driven by windows phone users just like you and I.

It is a great app in my opinion and one that I check multiple times a day. If you have any questions about it, just hit me up.

You can find it here at the marketplace: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/outsider/16b4f331-e05b-e011-854c-00237de2db9e

So I have Lumina 822.  I want a bigger screen.  T-mobile will buy my out of my two year contract and I can get cheaper service with no contract so money is a small factor as I will be saving $40 a month anyway.

I can wait too, just put a sim card from tmobile in this phone for a while.

      What do you guys think?

Okay so today Best Buy opened up pre-orders for the Nokia Lumia 920! I hopped in my car and drove down to ours and got my self one pre-ordered.

One thing though, if you pre-order at the store, it is only the matte black one. I was really wanting the cyan one but black will do. That was my second choice.

On the otherhand, if you pre-order online, you can choose which color. Weird, I know... Colors you can choose from are: Black, Red, Yellow, Cyan, White.

As of right now, AT&T has not started pre-orders. I called and verified that with them.
