ESXi, VMWARE and Direct I/o

Hello everyone,

Hopefully you can help a newby.

I currently have a GEN 8 Microserver using the Celeron G1610T processor.

I am running ESXi and a Windows 7 Virtual Machine. This part of the system setup is working well.

I would like to be able to use sound in the virtual machine however a sound card does not show as available when setting up the VM. My understanding is that the Gen 8 CPU chipset needs to support direct I/O for a sound card to be available to the VM and that the GT1610T does not support direct I/O.

I have also noted from another article that the GPU on the mother board is basic and struggles on a high resolution.

I was looking to upgrade to the Xeon E3-1265L v2 (thanks for the great article on processor upgrades).

If I wanted to be able to use sound when using my VM and improve the video, what adjustments would I need to make? or would upgrading the processor be all that was required?

Thank you for any help and advice you can give.

Regards,

Patrick
