frysie
I've read that 2012 R2 doesnt really behave like a windows machine? so to make it a home server it would be more windows like? ie. no domain and using the workgroup ? the gen8 will be a NAS file server which will be using the plex mod. should i just stick with 8.1 ? paradox
why not use FreeNAS?
Joe_Miner
Quite a few have used Windows 8.1 -- check the forums -- as well as Windows 7 -- both of which should be up-gradable for free to Windows 10 after the end of the month. You can enable Windows desktop features in S2012R2 and S2012R2 doesn't have to be in a domain (S2012R2-Essentials DOES) Windows 8.1 and Server 2012R2 have the same core but Windows 8.1 is substantially cheaper. Al_Borges
I use W8.1 as my server and will be upgrading it to W10 If all you want is a plex server then freenas or unraid , will work. For me, the ability to run stabilebits drivepool and scanner were key. So I went with Windows. frysie
Still a tad undecisive on what OS to use. I was using ESXI with a synology OS on my N54L ... which was okay but connecting to it remotely was really hard. Especially trying to get the torrent bit working
