The Smart Memory work with the KTH-PL316E/8G?

Or comes an error on the start of the server, that the server cant check it?

KTH-PL316 won't be detected as HP SmartMemory but you can ignore that error on the Gen8 Microserver. You don't lose anything by not having official HP memory fitted in the Gen8 Microserver. It just complains at you during boot and nothing else changes. It makes a difference on the larger more advanced ProLiants though.

HP have said that they still support third party memory.

It's not detected.  It doesn't hinder the system in anyway that i've noticed.  it'll throw an while it's booting but it'll then go on it's happy way booting,

Thanks. 8gb ram is cheap from amazon! :)

if you use flubit.com you can get it for about 51-52 per stick (rather than 59) - I was quoted on a match from ebuyer.com for 2x KTH-PL316E/8G for 103.00. The only problem was delivery is around 2-3 days according to other purchasers.

flubit allows you to request a quote, which then lasts for about 24hours.

  • 8 months later...

I just purchased a brand-new HP Microserver G8 (G2020T with 2Gb RAM) that arrived 2 days ago. I did not power the server on (bear with me)...

Price: US$195.00

I then purchased Kingston KTH-PL316E/8G (two 8Gb sticks). Arrived yesterday.

Price: US$123.00 for both. I also got the HP JackBlack DVD-RW for 64 bucks.

I popped in the RAM (removing the HP 2Gb stick already there), popped in 4x new Barracuda 500Gb SATA III drives and powered it on (for the first time). One HDD was DOA (being warranty-replaced today or tomorrow), but that's another story

To my surprise, the Kingston RAM shows up as HP SmartMemory, passed ECC validation, and thereafter I get an HP SmartMemory checkmark on boot.

Could it be the memory-upgrade + never-powered-on-before combination that produces this? I'm happy as a clam...
