My guess is that it was with a HighPoint RocketRAID card, that had external ports.

Otherwise, maybe an LSI card.

4 drives on the SDM on B120i

1 SSD on the ODD port on B120i

4 drives external on P222

1 ODD on a USB to SATA on internal USB

Umm ok

 

I have 32TB atm

and have a planned upgrade to 44TB

 

I have 9 drives internal all well spaced out and cool running

4 Bay Enclosure at 6gb/s

4 External USB 3.0

I also have 7 spare USB 3.0 Ports that i could populate if desired

but i have no need to extra storage atm

I currently am using a lego drive cage for the external but have rescued the drive cage and power supply from a n36 for the more permiate cage. I do have a 15 bay external SAS tray from work I am going to try out but it is only 3gbs.
