Hello everyone, my first post.

I have read the articles on the Microserver and will be taking delivery of mine this week.

Having read the posts on the Xeon E3-1265L v2, I was wondering where the best place is to can get one?

I will be setting the server up to be running VMs with 16GB of RAM. Is this the best processor for this purpose?

Thanks for your help and for all the guidance in the fantastic resource.

You've not said where you are. In Europe at least, it is getting very difficult to buy the E3-1265Lv2 now. Make sure that you don't buy the E3-1265Lv3 by accident. It isn't compatible.

Read http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/9437-xeon-e3-1265l-v2-where-to-get-one-in-the-uk/ for a recent thread about where to buy in the UK. The conclusion was that nobody had any stock.

The "best" processor would be the E3-1220Lv2 which is only 17W but it is dual core only.

If you don't mind exceeding the specced TDP by 10W and don't mind it is Sandy Bridge then it'd be the E3-1265Lv1.

If you don't mind exceeding the specced TDP by 10W then it'd be the E3-1265Lv2.

If you don't mind exceeding the specced TDP by 39W then it'd be the E3-1230v2 or similar.

The lower down the list you go, the better the performance but the higher the TDP. THe heatsink is only specced for the stock 35W CPUs.

Intel never made a Xeon "E3-1265Lv1"; you must be thinking of the Xeon E3-1260L.

eBay is your friend... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-E3-1265L-V2-CPU-/151692354071?

I bought one on 26th of May from eBay and it was sent yesterday to me. I expect to receive it during the next week.

This is the one I bought:

It is not cheap, but seems to be the best choice for VMWARE. I plan to make an ESXi 6.0 and run several VMs.

My plan is to boot from an SDcard, to have a SSD for VMs and 4x4TB WD Red as datastore only for storage.

We will see if it will work or not.

  • 1 year later...

I hunted high and low for a 1265L v2 in the end I gave up and bought a 1260L from eBay in China, still a bit pricey and I'll have to wait 3 weeks for it.

Sellers name is jess2189 they now only have 3 left.
