Extending a RAID 1 or RAID 0 to a RAID10

Hi everyone.

This is my first post! Go easy on me :)

I recently bought a HP Gen8 Microserver from Ebuyer as they were doing a £60 rebate (Although I am yet to remember to post the form!).

This is to replace my Synology DS211J NAS which I've had a few years now.

I currently have 2 x 3TB WD Red Drives and want to get 2 more in the future.

My question is, could I create an initial RAID array across 2 disks, and then add 2 more disks in the future (can't afford them just yet) and be able to expand the RAID array.

So either have

2 x 3TB in RAID 0 for 6TB usable storage. Then mirror this on to two additional drives to achieve RAID 10

or.

2 x 3TB in RAID 1 for 3TB usable storage, then stripe and extend this onto two additional drives to achieve 6TB usable storage in RAID 10.

I am planning on using the built in RAID controller, and have an Ultraslim ODD/HDD tray from Lindy to hopefully boot from an SSD with Windows 2012 installed. Just waiting on a FDD to SATA cable which I believe I'll need to complete the build.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you are using 2012 then just stick the drives in and use Drivepool, more flexible than RAID and you can chop and change disks as and when you please.
