Several attempts to POST a brand new Gen8 - problem?

Recommended Posts

fudge

This is my 2nd Microserver Gen8. 1st one was RMA'd as a DOA after having for less than 4 days, after I got RED health LED several times, even during Intelligent Provisioning. :(

Microserver #1 also displayed symptoms or events I have never seen before on ProLiants. During the POST phase.

(I am aware that at 10% the server resets - this is by design and a HP tech article discusses this.)

But is it normal for the Progress to reach 100% COMPLETE and start Progress again and again then eventually move on to the Sea of Sensors screen.?

The situation I have now is Microserver #2 is showing same symptoms.

This is backed up with Server Reset entries in the iLO Event Log that match the progress retry attempts.

See my video of the MS #1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFqK_AqiANU

FYI: MS #2 is not going RED health at all and staying up once it has POST and booted.

Background:

The server can produce these symptoms without any disks installed and has the shipped 2GB RAM stick.

Is this normal and what everyone else is seeing at power on.?

Thanks for any help.

iLO only acts as a KVM until the server boots, unless you have the Advanced key. I assume because you have no disks it is trying to boot from the NIC. It fails then reboots. Can you put a monitor on the server and watch the boot process from there?

I have an Advanced iLO License.

My server shows these symptoms in the video with and without disks.

Nowhere in the video is the server attempting to boot from NICs

Does the booting from NIC's phase not begin after POST?

My video is from cold power on.

My question was is this normal startup behaviour?

The server appears to perform Early system initialization repeatedly. Shouldn't it just need 1 pass.?

Thanks for any further help.

The screen at 1.36 doesn't show iLO Advanced initialized

Have you made any changes in the BIOS?

I have experienced constant reboots when I didn't have an OS on a disk that it could boot too.

It may be best to attach a monitor & keyboard and attempt to set it up locally.

Have you done any Mods?  Any changes to BIOS?  What is your CPU?

Do you have a PCIe card installed? It is looping just after it starts initialising PCI devices which will also involve running the option ROM on any PCIe card in the slot.

No PCIe card installed.

No mods; changes to BIOS. Microserver Gen8 G1610T

The microserver has just been opened out of the box and plugged in, powered on.

As I say I'm a bit hung up on this behaviour as this is second microserver, first one I RMA'd due to it showing same symptoms on power on, but crucially it ended up randomly after some time going to System Health Critical. RED LED on front of server. This one as yet has not gone RED.

I have had a monitor and keyboard attached - no change from what I see in ILO console.

When I look at other Youtube videos I see the power on Initialization taking one pass to complete 100%

My system initialization takes 3 passes to move on each all complete to 100%. Should I RMA this one.?

Do other forum members Gen 8's do this?
