yud 6 Posted April 16, 2015 Does anyone know if there is a genuine HP 8GB RAM module which will work in the N54L? (I am particularly interested in the HP RAM, not Kingston or other brands). If so, can you help me find the part number? The wiki and the posts linked in the hardware links only mention 3rd party 8GB modules. There is a mention of part number 647909-B21 - HP 8GB (1x8GB) Dual Rank x8 PC3L-10600(DDR3-1333) Unbuffered CAS-9 LP Memory Kit - but that's in reference to a Kingston RAM for the Gen8 model. I searched this same P/N with the N54L and came across a couple of posts that said the Kingston equivalent did not work in the N54L. But nothing about this 8GB module in the N54L. Can anyone help? yud 6 Posted April 21, 2015 So no one tried the HP 8GB module in the N54L?
schoondoggy 782 Posted April 21, 2015 There are a few threads on this forum where people discuss what 8GB modules they have gotten working in n54L/40L. There are some good links in this thread: http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5557-16gb-ram-for-n54l/
yud 6 Posted April 22, 2015 There are a few threads on this forum where people discuss what 8GB modules they have gotten working in n54L/40L. There are some good links in this thread: http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5557-16gb-ram-for-n54l/ Thanks! I have already looked at most of these links before posting and could find no mention of the HP RAM in the G7. Only other brands... The reason for my post: I think I may be able to score a genuine HP 8GB RAM stick at a reasonable price (long story...) It will come down to either: P/N 647909-B21 (664696-001) - HP 8GB (1x8GB) Dual Rank x8 PC3L-10600E (DDR3-1333) Unbuffered CAS-9 Low Voltage or P/N 669324-B21 (684035-001) - HP 8GB (1x8GB) Dual Rank x8 PC3- 12800E (DDR3-1600) Unbuffered CAS-11 From everyone's knowledge/experience - which has a better chance to work properly in the N54L? My current RAM is Kingston KTH-PL313E/4G, which is DDR3 PC3-10600E, so I'm thinking perhaps P/N 647909-B21 will be safer, especially if I'm only to replace 1 stick. Is this correct? Will appreciate any advice.
schoondoggy 782 Posted April 22, 2015 The slower speed may be a safer choice. If neither works in your N54L, both appear to work in the Gen8.
yud 6 Posted May 22, 2015 An update, in case it helps others: I installed this module in my N54L: HP 8GB (1x8GB) Dual Rank x8 PC3L-10600E (DDR3-1333) Unbuffered CAS-9 Low Voltage Memory (Option PN: 647909-B21 , Spare PN: 664696-001) It is installed next to a 4GB Kingston KTH-PL313E/4G (DDR3 PC3-10600E). Microserver booted fine, recognizing 12GB RAM. ESXi booted fine, recognizing 12GB RAM All VM's are up and running. So initial test shows the genuine HP 8GB module is compatible with the N54L. Will run for a few weeks and monitor it to make sure all is well. Then I'm planning to get another HP 8GB mudule and see if the N54L will run on 16GB RAM using genuine HP modules. (and yes, I know it can run some of the other RAM brands...) Will report back.
