Marvell 9230 Firmware Updates and such

Recommended Posts

Shonk

As People have shown an interest how to do this in the past here's how its done

This is my factory backup of the spi chip from my Syba SI-PEX40058 (Marvell 9230 Revision A1)

Syba for some reason dont supply firmware updates
but update the firmware on products being shipped

My goal is to get a database of original spi backup's for the SI-PEX40058

so people can update

I will start with mine for people on older revisions

If yours is newer or even older plz upload a copy for people

My backup (ORIG.BIN)
AUTOLOAD VERSION[0x00000000]: 200017
LOADER VERSION[0x0000C000]: 21001005
BIOS VERSION[0x00020000]: 1.0.0.1016
FIRMWARE VERSION[0x00030000]: 2.3.0.1051
BIOS Version 1.0.0.1017
Firmware Version 2.3.0.1051
Boot Loader Version 2.1.0.1005

this has to be done via a usb stick in dos

do a complete spi image backup (do this first)

go -ra

to use my image
cd bin
MVF_MAG.EXE ORIG.BIN -newImag

to go back to your old image
cd bin
MVF_MAG.EXE BKIMG0.BIN -newImag

This also has a copy of the beta firmware sourced from Stationdrivers

AUTOLOAD VERSION[0x00000000]: 200018
LOADER VERSION[0x0000C000]: 21001005
BIOS VERSION[0x00020000]: 1.0.0.1019
FIRMWARE VERSION[0x00030000]: 2.3.0.1055
BIOS Version 1.0.0.1018
Firmware Version 2.3.0.1055
Boot Loader Version 2.1.0.1005

if you wish to try it

just type go

There's a new Marvell 9230 firmware from an unknown source

Be warned it dropped my card from 5.0Gbps x2 to 2.5Gbps x2

So make sure you have a backup

Oh the beta firmware from stationdrivers that i included with my spi backup looks like so

another thing worth pointing out sometimes after a spi flash

the ilo sd card will fail to enumarate in windows for some reason

this is a hp bug and the only way to fix it is a full power down and unplug

e.g. not just power down but remove the electricity also for 10 secs

I Forgot to say there are two revisions of the chipset A0 and A1

My backup is only for revision A1

Also i have found a way of fixing the sd card failing to enumerate in windows after a spi flash

Cold Boot in iLO

It looks like Syba are just using the reference design for this card and shipping the stock Marvell 88SE9230 firmware. The VID/PID is the normal one for Marvell and the 88SE9230. I expect that the A0 revision chip is fine with your A1 revision firmware but obviously do this at your own risk etc...

If you use Google to search for "marvell 9230 firmware" then the first link is another forum that has

LOADER VERSION[0x0000C000]: 21001005

BIOS VERSION[0x00020000]: 1.0.0.1015

FIRMWARE VERSION[0x00030000]: 2.3.0.1050

Not sure if i would chance flashing A1 to an A0 chipset

most wll be A1 though ofc due to being the newer revision

the stock marvell flasher comes with two images

ImageA0.bin & ImageA1.bin

so there's differences somewhere most prob down to erata fixes on the A0 silicon
