Hi all,

I have just bought a HP g1610t micro server as I'm about to start my own startup business. Funds are extremely limited so I can't really justify forking out a good few hundred pounds on windows server 2012 essentials.

I already have a personal copy of windows 7 home premium I'd like to install on it.

The server would be used as a git server and a CI build server mainly. However I'd also like to install something for me to remote administrate it (any suggestions would be great).

I can't use a Linux OS because the build server needs to build c++ projects that uses windows specific code.

Can anyone tell me please if windows 7 home premium will be able to work satisfactory for what I require? Please note this server will not be on the same network as my team so we will have to use it over the internet.

Thanks for any help

If you have the option, get Pro instead.

It supports Remote Desktop, and some of the remote management stuff (if you set that up, manually).

However, Home Premium should work.

Hi CodeTemplar and welcome to the Forums.  When you get a chance introduce yourself http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/344-welcome-to-homeservershowcom-forums-introduce-yourself-here/

You can install Windows 7 -- Viren did it based on these instructions http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/8001-target-controller-missing-on-hardware-settings-screen/?p=87307

You'll find a lot of useful information and links at http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5639-proliant-microserver-gen8-links/

Let us know how your install goes

I believe Windows 7 & 8 are in line for free upgrades to Windows 10 when it comes out which will be a very nice upgrade IMO -- be sure to sign up http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/about

Thanks both for your replies. I just found an old copy of windows server 2008 r2 64bit. Would this be preferable over windows 7 home or is it no longer supported? As I said I'm mainly going to use it as a git and buil server so will need to install Visual Studio 2013 on it. Ta
