What is ILO4?

Recommended Posts

I plan to get me microserver gen8. But what is this ILO4?

Is it fully fuctional OOTB? Do I need to buy a separate license to make it work? Is it comparable to IPMI?

The Gen8 comes with the basic licence for iLo, there is a full version but its not a requirement unless there's something you want specifically from it...

The standard iLO4 allows you to connect to the machine and remotely work with the BIOS screens, it allows you to mount remote ISO files for use with Intelligent Provisioning, and it also makes a total mess of controlling fans.  It also stops working when an OS boots.  That's when HP have you by the short and curlies for the Advanced Licence.  You need that if you want iLO to work after the OS has booted.

It's all a bit pants, to be honest.  It sucks 6W of power, and it means you're stuck using the lameola Matrox G200 clone for video when there's an infinitely better GPU built in to the Intel CPU which is totally disabled.  Thanks HP.  Thanks for disabling the GPU and forcing us to use a video card from 1998.  It wasn't even particularly good in 1998 either.

All true, but iLo is still about the best remote access in the industry. Many features are overkill for the home user. The advanced key to unlock all of the features are readily available on eBay for $25-40 new.

Hmm...I think Dell's iDRAC is better by a country mile.  Even the remote access built in to AsRock's server boards is as good as the basic iLO4.  I can't agree that iLO is the best in the industry at all.

Is such an advanced key just a code that you have to fill-in somewhere, or hardware like a chip?

It is just a license key.

Thanks.

How loud is such a gen8. I like the build and plan on either buying this or a regular nas (qnap or synology) or building it myself. I want a small server for music only and want it as silent as possible. I can move it out of my listening room off- course. When I go the microserver way it has to run Windows Home Server 2011 as I use Asset UPnP for serving the stored music to my streamers. I hope all of this is possible. I won't need a Xeon in it, a 1610 or 2020 might be sufficient. But should I go RAID for redundancy? or AHCI? What controller would I need?
