Gen 8 as Media Server

Hello  :) ,

I'm looking to replace my old NAS with a microserver,

I know previously that the N54L was very commonly used with Plex for this purpose, so I am looking at the newer range of HP micro servers.

I intend to use the server for serving media, data backup and for some .net web development.

I would be looking at the G1610T and I have a few questions:-

• Would this be sufficient for running plex? (if not what would you recommend as an upgrade?)

• What OS would people recommend? (server or windows 7/8?)

• I was looking at getting a couple of WD Red 2TB drives (would I need to use RAID?)

• Is the G2020T worth the extra upfront cost?

Is there anything else I should consider or any known issues?

Thanks,

Sean

Hi Sean and welcome to the Forums!

There's a very timely thread just recently started that would have a lot of info for you http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/8774-is-a-hp-gen8-microserver-overkill-for-a-home-cinema/

Also, I'd suggest going thru the links at http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5639-proliant-microserver-gen8-links/

Hey Joe!

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Now that I have taken some more time to have a look around in more depth, I think I am ready to plan on taking the plunge  :o

I'm planning on going with the G1610T as stock and will see how the CPU performs with Plex.

(if it becomes an issue I was looking at the i3-3250, I couldn't see it on the Passmark chart but I would assume it would be compatible? if not then the 3240?)

I am planning on getting a Samsung 120Gb evo SSD in the ODD space to run the OS. I'm thinking of running windows 8 for my needs (Will cross the Windows 10 free upgrade bridge when the situation arises!)

What kind of licence should I be looking for as prices seem to vary considerably.

I will start with 2 3GB WD Red hard drives for the data drives. Considering the data backup is not crucial, is there any advantage of me using RAID?

I will grab a ram upgrade from one of the following:-

http://www.mrmemory.co.uk/memory-ram-upgrades/hp-compaq/proliant/microserver-gen8

http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Compaq/proliant-microserver-gen8

Does the memory speed make much difference? What is the maximum speed supported by the BIOS?

Sorry for the overload of information and questions, just hoping to get the machine up and running without any problems :)

Thanks,

Sean

Thanks for that Ikon, I have managed to find a reasonably priced Windows 8 Pro Retail :)

Just had another quick thought about the SSD this morning, will I require some kind of caddy or mounting kit to keep the ssd in place?

Also after some further reading it looks like I will need one of the following?

Thanks,

Sean

Yes, I attempted to DIY one myself with the junks I have, and only to find out that many cheap stata power cables these days are not made with copper wires (un-solderable)! I don't like Maplin, but this connector is well worth the £1.
