Software Raid10 or Raid5?

I use OpenMediaVault, which is a Linux based NAS and went from a 4 disk Raid5 to a 4 disk Raid10 and my write speeds over ethernet went from 105Mbps to right at 85ish. Is that normal??? I thought that Raid5 had an overhead for calculating checksums that was supposed to make it slower and that Raid10 was just a stripped mirror and was supposed to be faster??? I wasn't expecting a speed increase since the Ethernet maxes out at 105-110 but I sure didn't expect a slow down.

Thanks

Don

That sound about right. A four drive RAID10 should be about the same speed as two drives in a RAID0. A four drive RAID5 should be faster than a four drive RAID10, even software RAID. The slow down for software RAID5 will really show up if you replace a bad drive, rebuild or add a drive, expansion.
