Recommend me a RAID Card

Recommended Posts

realsysadmin

Hi guys,

I'm gonna be upgrading my server over the next month, pretty much an overhaul. In doing this, i'm upgrading my storage from 4 X 1TB in RAID 5 on a dell PERC5i with a LSI flash upgrade on. I'm looking to get 4 x 3TB WD Red drives, but I need a new RAID card that can handle this. I don't want to break the bank on this, I just need something average that will do the job.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Welcome to HSS forums. A lot of people on these forums like the HighPoint RocketRAID 2720. It's about $150 I think.

I have those drives with the 2720 card.  Very pleased.

What OS are running and what kind of server do you have?

In general I prefer LSI RAID cards, but if you have a OEM server I would lean toward getting a RAID card from that vendor.

Example,if you have a HP server, get a HP RAID card. They are very good cards and they will work with all the tools that come with the server.

I, too, prefer LSI/3ware cards, but they are more toward the high end than the RocketRAID cards, so I thought the 2720 might be a good fit. For sure using an HP card in an HP computer is a better match.

Thanks for the welcome. Love the forum and podcasts!

I will check that card out. I've never used RocketRAID before, i've always just used hand-me-down cards from work really.

I'm going to be running Server 2012 Essentials R2 on a custom box. I'm going to be going for a lighter box power wise when I get round to building it.
