Target Controller Missing on Hardware Settings Screen

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

So I'm a newbie to the whole Servers area; I bought a Gen8 Microserver a few weeks ago and am wanting to use it to setup as a media server. For about 2 weeks now, I've been trying to set it up with no luck.

I installed a 200gb Sata drive into bay 0 (the left most bay) and using the F10 switch went into the config area where I set the Array Config for the Harddrive to Raid 0.

Now when I exit out of the Config area and go to install Windows 7 using a bootable USB, on the first step (out of 4) which is "Hardware Settings", I'm missing the "Target Controller" option.

If I can't select a target, I'm pretty sure I can't get an OS to install.

I'm soooo confused - and my wife is getting angry with me sitting on the floor for hours on end trying to figure this out :(

Help please,

Thanks,

Viren

When you are booting the system, do you see the B120i bios load and does it tell you it has one array/volume?

Use the Inteligent Provisioning for the install it downloads and installs the raid control driver needed to see the B120i for Windows to install on the drive while in raid mode.

Hi Viren and welcome to the forums.  I don't believe it's possible to install Windows 7 or windows 8 thru IP -- you will have to do it manually (you cannot use Intelligent Provisioning).

Windows 7 manual install should be the same and use the same drivers as the manual install of WHS2011 described in http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5639-proliant-microserver-gen8-links/

specifically WHS2011 with both a b120i and P222 http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5980-has-anyone-loaded-run-whs-2011-on-a-gen8/page-3#entry78202

or WHS2011 in AHCI Mode (you have to set that in the BIOS) http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5980-has-anyone-loaded-run-whs-2011-on-a-gen8/page-4#entry79759

Schoondoggy - it says " Hp Dynamic Smart Array B120i RAID Controller (v3.06.0, 0mb) 1 logical volume"

Does that mean that the HDD is not detected?

Use the Inteligent Provisioning for the install it downloads and installs the raid control driver needed to see the B120i for Windows to install on the drive while in raid mode.

Hi Yodafett,

Actually I did use the intelligent provisioning to install - and it keeps asking for the HDD Drivers; which there aren't any.

As Joe_Miner said, you can't use Intelligent Provisioning to install Win7.

Thank you for warm welcome :)

Oh man - Joe - your instructions are so detailed. Thank you from everyone who has ever bought a Gen8.

Got 1 more question - the model I have doesn't have an optical drive; Can I boot do a bootable USB Windows installation?

Thanks,

Viren

Yes, you can install from a USB drive. You can also attach a USB DVD player and boot from a DVD.

Joe - Your steps worked. WOOHOO. Now have Windows 7 on the box. Two things that need to be done now:

1) Get internet access on the box

Installed the below drivers and Win7 recognizes the drivers but when the cable is plugged in, no network connection.

Network Drivers

·         16.4.0.1 (18 Feb 2014)  HP Broadcom 1Gb Driver for Windows Server x64 Editions  cp021802.exe

2) Get the box to recognize the 2nd HDD (4 TB Seagate)

If you haven't done it yet, try that cable in another computer to ensure it's working properly.
