I ran the reinitialize command on the 1.5TB drive and it  now shows perfect health. As soon as I sync the 1TB of data back onto it

I'll see if it will now back up to 2011. If not I am going to replace it.

No such luck. It made it as far as 68%, but the backup failed. The OS on a separate SSD backed up without problems.

Enough of this, going to replace drive. I don't do video editing or anything intense. Would you recommend a RED

drive for a data drive on 8.1, or something faster, maybe a different brand?

Unless you need really high throughput, I think a Red would work fine.

Thanks. I'll wait for the next sale on a 2 or 3TB Red and backup my current drive via Acronis until then.

Even though they were a few months out of warranty, WD replaced two of my 2TB Greens with 2TB Reds. The other 4 bad Green drives were too far out of warranty.

I asked if I could pay a differential to upgrade the 2TB drives to 4TB, they were not that generous however. Doesn't hurt to ask.

2TB Reds to replace 2TB Greens - sounds like a good deal.

Especially when they did it for free out of the goodness of their hearts. Of course after the phone call the flaky 2TB Green

completed backup for the first time in weeks.

That sounds about right based on my experience with Greenies. They would work for a while, then start developing bad sectors, I would SpinRite them, they would work again for another while, then start developing bad sectors...... rinse & repeat.
