Might be useful for anyone looking to scavenge parts from decommissioned equipment.

The MicroServer only uses UDIMM ECC. Many of the servers listed above can use either UDIMM or RDIMM. If you pull memory from a decommissioned server you still need to confirm they are UDIMM.

Yep, true. Found this out the hard way.

I knew the MicroServer needed unregistered/unbuffered sticks, but I didn't realise the 2x8GB sticks that I pulled out of a DL380 G8 were Registered and obviously didn't work.

The server stuck during POST at the state "memory and qpi link initialization start 90%" and an error code 0114.

 

Not that it cost me anything except time... I'll have a scrounge through the other kit we're decom'ing for some UDIMMs.

 

Just to confirm something else for the next guy that comes along: As far as I can tell, the G8 can use both single and double ranked UDIMMs.

 

Here's my current setup running just fine with both:
