The last paragraph is particularly damning:

The incident is the latest on a growing list of mass attacks against embedded devices reported this year. According to security experts, attackers are shifting their focus from desktop applications to such devices because they’re plagued by basic vulnerabilities and can’t be easily secured by nontechnical users.

The article does say that, back in February, Synology released a patch to close the vulnerability that allowed the attack.

Not to mention they're less likely to be discovered, because people don't use these devices as their everyday machines. This guy, whoever he is, was pretty stupid really. If he'd just put in a detector that let the program know when someone was trying to access the NAS and had it throttle back until the system was idle again, he might never have been discovered. Now, he's likely to get tracked down and go to jail.

How do you know that somebody hasn't gotten his code and IS doing that? :(

Well, of course we don't know. I was only talking about him. The logical extension is that somebody said, "Idiot. I can fix that and make off like a bandit."
