DV Capture and W8

I have Sony Handycam (DCR-PC108E) and want to preserve the tapes onto my media drive.

Some research reveals using the Firewire port on this device is the way to go.

But what DV capture software to use (free if possible) that will work with W8.1

Anyone with some experience with this?

Yes but all I have is win 8.1 (except Virtual machines).  I did a search on "DV Capture" which revealed WinDV was the best free software a few years back but can't see where anyone has used it on 8. I have found a firewire 400 card for $15 on ebay.  Guess I may have to pay for some suitable software!

Do a quick search on dv capture Windows. I think you should be able to do it natively at least up thru Win7

Upon further research it appears both Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker may be able to import DV in W8.  Thanks, you made me persevere.

Update. It all worked fine. I put the firewire card into an 9 -10 year old dell with xp. Attached the Sony Handycam. Started Windows Movie Maker and it saw the card and the Handycam and asked where I wanted to store the converted tape. 8 tapes took 12 hours to copy as wvm files which I now have for posterity. The Dell Dimension 8400 roared like a lion for the whole 12 hours. An Intel Pentium chip under a lot of strain and probably dried out paste between the chip and cooler.
