HP Gen8 Upgrade

Recommended Posts

unr

Hi all,

I'm really new to servers and the whole upgrading of systems manually. I'm looking to get the HP Gen8 Proliant Microserver and upgrade it with the following:

-RAM upgrade to potentially 16GB

-Add an optical drive

-Upgrade to SSD

I'm not sure how to go about it, any help will be much appreciaed!

Cheers,

unr

Hi UNR and welcome to the forums.  When you get the chance introduce yourself http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/344-welcome-to-homeservershowcom-forums-introduce-yourself-here/

Start by checking out the Gen8 links on CSKenny's 1st page in the thread http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5639-proliant-microserver-gen8-links/

Ask lots of questions

You may also find useful stuff on the blog http://homeservershow.com/ -- try out various search tags (in the right column) for things like Gen8, MicroServer, etc. to get to the good stuff quicker :)

Just having a look at those links! Thanks a lot. Will get back with more questions as they come popping by! Just quickly-in buying SSD's for such a machine, should I be worried about compatibility issues, etc? Cheers :)

How difficult would it be to add a SSD and an optical drive. Most people I've seen so far have been putting the SSD in the ODD slot...but seeing as I need both, what would be a viable option here?

Thanks,

unr

I need to test it a bit, but this may make it easier to have a SSD and a ODD:

You can run the ODD from USB and a SSD will fit on top of the ODD and conect to the SATA II port. Leaving the B120i to run the four 3.5" drives.

You could use one of these to power the SSD:

convert your internal usb to drive your sata ODD and then you have a proper sata port to use for a SSD.

Cheers SD...

Will find a UK supplier.

Will I have to rebuild or can I swap from the internal bay to the ODD's header for my SSD .
