I have two home offices located at different sites. I will need both servers to be quiet. Any ideas on a build and brand names ? both server will need to talk to each from different location for example i will like to put all my project at site A and sync it with site b and while site B will have another project folder that will sync back to site A.  Virtualization will require for one site.

I have a budget of $1500 usd

I will like to have:

Min build requirement

1. 8 gigs ram
2. ssd drives
3.windows 2003 because that is all i can afford for a server license using dfs or something???
4.  possible raid adapter
5. quad cpu ... dont know whether to with intel or amd
6. no gaming so i guess standard integrated video is fine

hopefully i can meet my budget reqirement

let me know guys if this is possible

I would suggest using WHS2011. You can find it for $40-50 US. And it's based on Server 2008. HP Microserver N54L is really cheap and quiet.

You did not mention how much data you need to store.  DFS is not all that complicated but could get tricky using workgroups over a VPN.  Have you thought about the VPN?

A lot of unknowns here:

  1. 25-50GB total, or at each site?
  2. how fast is the Internet connect at each site?
  3. how much of the data changes each day (and will therefor require re-synching)?

Also, if you need to run VMs at one site, WHS2011 won't work at that site.

So how were you going to sync the data?

using distrubuted file system from windows

1. yes total for both sites

2. 15 meg download 5 meg upload both sites

3. 1 gig or less at most daily

DFS will only work in the same workgroup or same domain.

jmwills,

thanks good point forgot about that.

two questions:

1. so if i dcpromote both servers to be on same domain. which requires dnsserver and dhcp and active directory services, and dfs  this may just work. Now the problem will be if the workstation are not part of the domain then is possible to still communicate with the promoted server? I do not wish to have the worstation to be part of the new domain.

2. is there any other free software that provides softwaring sync over the network protected by vpn?
