So any updates on cheap enclosures?

Is this the one to still get?

Sans Digital TR4X+B

I am working on this:

This ICYDOCK is an internal, but I think it may make an interesting external. They make external versions, but the are USB or eSATA:

add this cable:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/161559272403?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

for power I will modify a PC power supply to test, but I am looking for cleaner solutions long term.

Here are tutorials on modifying a PC power supply to be a bench power supply:

http://makezine.com/projects/computer-power-supply-to-bench-power-supply-adapter/

http://www.wikihow.com/Convert-a-Computer-ATX-Power-Supply-to-a-Lab-Power-Supply

ICY DOCK also makes one with no backplane:

http://www.icydock.com/goods.php?id=166

I would match this up with this cable:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/251394255280?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I hope to test the first one of these this weekend.

sounds good and not too expensive.

My micro server will live in the loft - so can i modify the PSU (by this do you mean extend and run power from the inside to the outside to the enclosure?

will you be able to setup raid using the ACU of the p222 controller?

This will connect to the external port of the P222. So, yes the 4 external drives would be able to be configured into RAID on the P222.

The power supply mod is for a separate power supply to run this enclosure. I do not think the PS in the Gen8 has enough power to run four more 3.5" drives.
