Fan question for N54L...

The biggest concern I see with aftermarket fans is not the rewiring but the low rpm that can prevent the server from starting.

I've noticed this too... the n54l appears to have a minimum requirement of ~700rpm, some controlled fans drop below this level therefore showing boot errors.

Sounds to me like there's a market for a line of fans that have adjustable PWM settings: e.g. 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, 125%, 150%, 175%, 200%, and 250% of the actual RPM. So, say the fan is truly spinning at 500 RPM. Just set the adjustable PWM to 200% and the system thinks the fan is spinning at 1,000 RPM :)

I replaced the fan from my HPN54-L with this one http://quietpc.co.uk/nf-s12a-pwm and it worked just fine. It is much quieter than the original.

Thanks for the remcommendation, did you have to change the wires around with this fan?

Also, I presume changing the fan is as outlined in this document: http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c02473845-10.pdf

I cannot remember having to change the wires on the fan. The fan I used is a 4 Pin PWM so unless my colleague made a change I am unaware of, it just plugged straight in. I was unaware of the document from HP, I spend half my life stripping down PCs and Servers so this was just another one. I'll try and reach my colleague who gave me the fan and ask if he changed anything but I'm pretty sure it was standard.
