External HDD for Server Backup - Recommendations?

Have a pair of external HDDs for WSE12 server backup (rotating weekly between the 2):

1.) Seagate Expansion 3 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV3000100 - 1 year old, still working

2.) WD My Book 3TB Desktop USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Storage WDBACW0030HBK-NESN - JUST DIED after slightly over a year in operation

Would like at least a 3 TB USB 3.0 external hard drive to replace #2 above (or a 4 TB if economical).

Don't have much history with reliability of external HDDs between WD vs. Seagate.  Any recommendations or deals?  Thanks!

I just posted a couple of 4TB and a 3TB USB 3.0 drive deals.

I like the HGST drives in externals.

My general impression is that most pre-packaged external drives don't last as long, or are as reliable, as ones you build yourself. That said, I have to agree that HGST drives seem to be a really good choice.

Stablebit Scanner recently reported SMART Errors with one of my external HDDs being used for my WSE12 server backup.  Fortunately I'm rotating between 2 drives (1 per week).  Once SMART Errors are reported, how do you reset it and/or force SBScanner to do a full scan/test of the problematic drive?  I have already received a replacement but would like to be sure these errors are serious before taking this drive out of production.

I sure hope these HGST 4 TB ext HDDs go on promo again. I've now recently lost both. WD and Seagate Desktop Expansion drive. Both ext USB 3.0. Seems the lifespan of these drives is approx. 1.5-2 yrs max. Am rotating between 2 ext HDDs for my WSE12R2 server backups that run 2x daily.

Always seems to fall right outside of warranty too!

Schoondoggy, good call. Yes, I have noticed both brands ran hot and StableBit Scanner alerted me. However not same w/ HGST thus far.

I also noticed the Seagate and WD models didn't go into a low power state when not in use (during backup windows) which seems like a poor design and didn't help any. I believe the HGST has this power saving feature which is a plus.
