Dave asks "What would you change in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials?"

I did that for WHSv1. Worked well, But that wasn't a domain controller ..... well, wasn't SUPPOSED to be. :P

But I have several hundred reinstalls of WHSv1... and stopped activating them, because I wouldn't last 30 days for the install in most cases...

@jmwills, but what if you know you want it?  $500 for 2012 Essentials... and then not much later, $500 more for R2 Essentials? For a business, yeah I can see doing that. For a home? Nope.

Hmmm,

I still have a current Technet subscription and I was thinking/hoping/praying that I would be able to test out WS2012R2 on an HP Microserver (currently running WHS11) I have here.

Not possible?

Flash the BIOS with SP64420 and you should be good to go.  http://homeservershow.com/hp-proliant-microserver-bios-flash-sp64420.html

Thanks Joe, I have indeed been following your fantastic work on the Microservers closely. In fact your posts (+pods) have been my main inspiration for doing things on the Microserver (and Drashna of course in terms of using covecube drivepool etc), this is the first time I have had the chance of expressing this.

Good to know that, with the BIOS flash, my TechNet sub for WS2012R2 will work just fine. Need to carve myself a few hours to do it.

cheers

E

Strangely, my TechNet key still works (legal disclaimer: used in a test/home environment only.)

Should be GTG. And I mentioned that manly because my TechNet subscription isn't active anymore yet it still works.

Timekills & Drashna - The key\activation or the software still works?

My technet is still active however expires in sept.  When mine expires\no longer activates I will have to go back to WHS V1 as that's my only valid licence after technet goes away... very :(.  I certainly will not fork out $500 for a new licence for 2012E R2, let alone MSDN fees (whole other thread\discussion).   I'm also assuming WHS V1 will still activate (non-technet licence)....

Sorry for hijacking this thread
