losing faith in client restores

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or is everyone having way more issues with client restores?

I'm wondering if Microsoft is not updating the feature and we're all suffering because of it.  I've had various issues with WHS 2011 and Essentials R1.  Sometimes they both work sometimes they don't.

I've done very little with essentials R2.

Can't say as I've had any really significant issues with WHS2011 Client Backup. I did, a while back, run into the issue where it couldn't wipe out and re-create the partitions on a new SSD I installed in my main desktop but, once I resorted to doing that manually, it's all been good.

I just restored two this week to external drives. Smooth as silk.

There is a method to doing thst is quite easy thst does not require the server GUI.

Can you cite some of the issues you're having?

Two major things I do when prepping up for a client restore from WHS2011:

1. Remove any pre-existing partitions in the target drive and just let the restore process recreate them

2. Make sure that the target drive is as big or bigger than the old one

Took me a while to figure it out but when it did finally worked, saved me from an even lengthier trouble of reinstalling everything from scratch.

With those two in mind, it's 100% recovery for me. I even successfully restored a backup to a different motherboard (same chipset, different manufacturer) when the old one died.

I've had success restoring to a HDD after wiping out the partitions, but not to a SSD -- I've always had to manually create raw, unformatted, no-drive-letter partitions and then restore.

If you download the Restore Wizard to a local machine you can use it very easily.  What I do is delete all partitions on the target drive, recreate them, and then the wizard will allow you to use Disk Management to choose the source partition to the target partition.  Very simple.  Restoring an 80 gig drive takes about 10 minutes.

I use a "toaster" docking station to host the target drive.

I've heard of issues where folks have purchased a new UEFI based PC and the Restore fails because they don't know that you need the WHS2011 UEFI hotfix which is not automatically installed on the server using Windows Updates. (Not sure if the patch will become part of Windows Update). You can still backup and restore files without the patch, but not a Full PC Recovery.

This applies especially for Windows 8/8.1 tablets that are UEFI based.

I am trying to do a Windows Home Server 2011 full client restore of a wired dell win 7 laptop. The process starts properly, but after about an hour I get an “Unknown Network Error” and the process fails. Any help to resolve this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks, Skip

Here is the log of the failure:
