The controller for the NL40 built into the BIOS has read cache and read ahead.   What is the difference?   I cannot find anything.

A read cache is just a cache -- data is temporarily stored in the cache so it can be quickly retrieved if it's requested a 2nd time.

IIRC, Read Ahead is a predictive algorithm used to try to read data off the drive ahead of when it's requested. IOW, the system tries to guess what you'll want to retrieve next and goes and gets it ahead of time.
