As a reference:

My temps really aren't that far off from what Psikey, Sorted, Overcoat and others had been seeing.............

Overcoat is running lower due to his active cooling system.

@ikon:  I actually found some clips that would work at Lowes -- in case I destroy/lose 1 or more accidently :)  Roger on the wine!

Trying to collect some of the Temp studies in one Place -- Here are some of mine:

It is possible to mount a low profile active heat sink on the CPU like OverCoat did at http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/6170-active-cpu-cooling-for-the-gen8/#entry68659

Crapgoose mounted a small fan on his passive heat sink http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/6762-anyone-who-has-changed-the-heat-sink-on-a-gen8-microserver/?p=74302

Also Adsboel has done some work mounting 4 little fans on the passive heat sink in a push-pull configuration.  See:

Slightly different topic, but relevant to the temperature discussion:

Which ICs tend to heat up the most on the G8 Motherboard?  I have some Enzotech mosfet heat sinks ordered, and I might use a few of them on the G8.  Heck, I'm thinking about using them on my P222.  :P

So can I ask if you have a P222 running does the fan often go back to the 6% value when the system is not under load?

As a P222 owner, mine does not.  There is additional heat from the RAID chip.

To be fair, there's probably additional heat in my system from using two SSDs on top of the four drives, and if you use a RAID configuration that actually involves parity calculations (e.g., RAID-5/6/50/60) that's going to actually make the RAID controller do some real work, plus you've got a minor bit of heat from the cache.

I'm running Folding@home on mine in "Light" mode (which tops out at 50% usage per core), but having paused Folding for about five minutes, mine's at 38%, down from 42%.  I'm rarely near my server though (I mostly use my laptop upstairs now) so I don't have to listen to it.  It's never been unstable, even set to "Optimized" cooling mode, and no lapped heatsink.
