Gen8: buy P422 and RAID5, or RAID10 with B120i?

I've currently got three 3TB drives on my P410 in RAID5, and I'm looking to get either a P222/P420 to get rid of the noisy fan issue, or I could just get an extra 3TB drive and run them all on RAID10 on the B120i.

Is there any real benefit of doing one or the other? Ultimately, I am still bottlenecked by my 1Gbit connection onto my PC, and I've never been sure which way to go with the RAID5 for and against arguments.

The P420 is not on the approved list for the MS Gen 8. I know it works and it shows up in iLo, but I have not checked the fan behavior with it in the system.

Raid 5 with four 3TB drives will give you 9TB useable. Raid 10 with four 3TB drives will give you 6TB useable.

Raid 5 has more overhead, works best with a real Raid card. Raid 10 is less overhead.

Performance with either will be similar in your case, your P410 has cache so that helps the Raid 5 performance.

Have you tried the P410 in the Gen 8 to see how the fan noise is?

Have you tried changing the fan settings in the BIOS?

which setting? I recall something about it being on silent profile.

In the BIOS;

Advanced Options

      Thermal configuration

                      Optimal

                       Increased

                       Maximum

I'm fairly certain I have it on Optimal.

I think I'll have to buy the fourth disk today anyway (currently running 3 drive RAID5), can the B120i create a RAID0 array and then I expand it to RAID10 later?

I am not sure if the B120i can do a RAID 0 to 10 migration.

A quick google search tells me the B120i can't do on the fly migration... So I think the P222 is going to be the best option.
