sql server?

You need plenty of RAM once you run production databases on SQL Server. For learning, with small dB's, 4 or 8 GB should be enough.

My advice is similar to jmwills, but I would run server 2012 with sql 2012.

 

Server 2012 isn't perfect. But, it's the way going forward. I think sql 2014 is just a little too new for me to want to play with it at this point, so I'd stay 2012 there.

Yep. Don't be bleeding edge if you don't have to, unless you just want to play with the newest stuff.
