Those metal brackets in the gen8 HDD caddies...

Are they just there to keep the shape of the caddy?

 

Yes.

 

Confused me too the first time.  I like the Gen7 brackets better, and the Mediasmart ones were even more slick.

The best drive caddies I've ever had are the ones that came with my Acer H340. They require no screws at all and suspend the drives in rubber grommets so vibration is reduced.

That is why I liked the Mediasmart's bays as well.  Tool-less.

 

In the case of the Gen8 Microserver, the anti-vibration mounts are in the drive cage in the chassis, rather than the individual drive caddies.

Too bad. It's far superior when each drive is dampened individually.
