RR 2720SGL Drive Replacement Procedure

Recommended Posts

Simcheck

Hi,

I am running WHS2011 with 5 - 2tb drives in Raid 5 on 2720SGL card with 3Ware cables. Been running fine for over a year but recently one of the drives failed. Got RR alarm and Web UI shows bad drive and Raid is disabled. Did recover a few times but same result. So I am ready to replace drive but not sure of the exact procedure.

Do I . . .

1. Turn off auto rebuild.

2. Power down server

3. Physically replace bad drive

4. Boot Up

If all above is correct not sure what next....

Do I simply select recover and it will recognize new drive or will it complain bad drive is missing?

Appreciate any help anyone can give.

Thanks,

Bob

Add the new drive back and rebuild.

Thanks for the quick response....

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work.

Replaced physical drive.

Rebooted into WHS2011

Opened Rocket Raid Web GUI

Logical tab shows Array disabled

New drive is listed in Physical device information with red 'x'

New drive is listed as Spare

When I click on Maintenance it shows the new drive as 'offline'

Clicking on Recover opens message box 'Some disks does(sic) not exist,

If I go to Recover tab. I do not see anything in the recover list.

Updating Recover list from backup says it is successful but still do not see anything in the recover list.

Am I missing a step? I would expect a dialogue saying it is in process of rebuilding. Maybe I'm just impatient to see the rebuild progress dialogue....

Thanks,

Bob

Have you reviewed this document?

http://www.highpoint-tech.com/help/

I would look at the section that starts with Settings- turn on auto rebuild.

Hi,

Yes, sorry, should have mentioned that I re-enabled the auto rebuild. Reading the help is why I'm concerned. I do not get any indication that they talk about that the rebuild / recover is in progress.

You have to remove the old drive , add the new drive and rebuild the array.  The GUI should be self explanatory.  The array should still be there there even with the drive missing just showing a warning.

Well that is what I thought as well. Everything seems self explanatory but that is not what is happening.

I have....

Powered down

replaced the drive.

Rebooted

Array is visible and disabled but with new drive as off line and listed as spare

Reenabled auto rebuild.

Rebooted

Same status

If I go to Recover tab it does NOT show me array list.

If I restore the backup list it states it was successful but still does not show anything in the array list so cannot click on recover...

Yes ... in the BIOS all 5 drives are shown as configured and the new drive also has (spare) after configured in the array listing...

It shouldn't' be a spare.
