I plan to get a SSD to  my N54L to get some more speed out of my VM's. If I want to add a SSD, those that mean I must flash the BIOS with the modded bios?

Depends on which port you want to connect it to. The 4 drive cage bays are 3Gb/s I believe, and I think the onboard may be also. I think the eSATA port is only 1.5Gb/s though. It requires the modded BIOS to get up to 3Gb/s.

JM, help me out here: is that correct?

Thanks for the reply. Im sure you are correct.

But how do I get a SSD to stay in the drive cage? SSD = 2.5" and its a 3.5" bay.

I just flashed to the modded BIOS, I used "TheBays". Very simple!  But I dont see all the settings that I see in some other BIOS. Settings that should be "disabled".

Like I have only the upper part of the BIOS. Not the Primary master etc...

And not the SATA IDE Combined Mode = Disabled.

  • 2 weeks later...

If I wanted to put a 2.5" device in a MicroServer driver cage I most likely would mod the drive caddy so I attach the 2.5" drive to it, then I would slide the drive caddy into the cage. Of course, it would be necessary to make sure the caddy is modded just right, so the data & power SATA connectors would line up, but that shouldn't really be too difficult.

As for the BIOS, perhaps the one you used isn't the same one everyone else in the forums is using.... just a thought.

Here's some more info on the EZConvert and how it's used in a MicroServer http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/6630-icy-dock-ezconvert-mb882sp-1s-2b/?p=72890

Of course for a temp solution you could always just "plug it in" http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/6630-icy-dock-ezconvert-mb882sp-1s-2b/?p=72962   :)

This is the BIOS-MOD that I and many others have used successfully, YMMV, http://homeservershow.com/hp-proliant-n40l-microserver-build-and-bios-modification-revisited.html
