capi92
Hi, I'm trying to connect an external USB 3.0 drive to on-board USB 3.0 port of HP Microserver G8 G1610T. When connected to USB 2.0 ports, drive is detected by ESXi 5.5. When connected to USB 3.0 ports, drive is not starting at all and is not detected by ESXi. I know that G1610T do not support passthrough. Does ESXi support USB 3.0 without pass through ? Or is the problem coming the on-board USB 3.0 controller that is not supported by ESXi? In that case, does anyone succeed with an alternative USB 3.0 controller ? Thanks a lot for your help. Regards, Pierre
schoondoggy
The USB 3 controller on the MS G8 is a separate controller. The NEC controller is popular. I would think it is supported. You may want to poke around Paul's site lots of good ESXi info. These is a ESXi 5.5 NEC USB 3 reference in this post; http://www.tinkertry.com/best-parts-of-vmwares-esxi-5-5-free-hypervisor-rely-on-vcenter-which-isnt-free-uh-oh/

ikon
schoondoggy, this does sound like a missing driver issue in ESXi, right?

c0mm0n
Now running 5.0u3 and using usb3 controller in PT mode with usb2 devices on IT on ubuntu 12.04, working great. I have weird issues with usb in non PT mode, friends tell me they don't have it with the same usb device but different hardware. But PM mode fixes this. Karlos
Hey guys. ive got a weird situation where my G8 with an E3-1265L in it WAS showing the USB 3.0 controller in ESXi 6 an di was able to pass it through to my HTPC VM and i had been using it. then all of a sudden out of no where, it doesnt appear anymore. im glad i was able to pass through my USB 2.0 controller to my VM otherwise it would have been a big pain in the ass. anyone get any ideas? cheers.
