I am now having second thoughts about a HW raid controller.... I want to run RAID5 and also ESXi...I am not confident using a linux mdadm software raid (but have previous experience with server2008 software raid).

Is it a viable solution to run a windows SW RAID5 ontop of ESXi? What will performance be like?

Yeah if you use a separate Windows server as an iSCSI target (not on the same box) for ESXi.  (It depends on how you have the disks configured and if they were all SSD's.  Just kidding.)
