0xc000025 trying to recover the system reserved partition

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm having an issue, I've NEVER once been able to recover a single PC from my WHS. When I've tried in the past on my p8p67 motherboard, I would either get 0xc000025 while PE was loading. I've been able to work around this by #1 burning a CD/DVD #2 using a different USB port strangely enough. Moving forward, I was able to load the drivers on my system, connect to my WHS, and start the recovery process.

(this is the combination of about 2 days of trying)

The process will only work if I recover the data partition. If I try to recover the system reserve it will always crash with a 0xc0000025

Here's the logs that I pulled. Looks pretty straightforward, so I decided to recreate the partitions as the system reserve was 1MB smaller than the restore image just in case but here we go now with error 0x80080005 Could not load VDS...

Help!! What's the the point of this stupid server if I can't ever restore!

I know, I tired to attach the log file but the forum wouldn't accept it so I just pasted it ;)

I have my 2 DVI monitor's and my keyboard and mouse... Nothing else other then the WINPE USB or CD depending on which i booted from and the Raided 0 intel x25 ssd's.

I was able to recover the data disk but not the system reserved... that will never restore no matter what I did.

the horrid thing is my WHS boot disk died about 1 week earlier, I restored it form back up with a replaced disk and started the restore on my client desktop... Only it's not working and I didn't know after the restore of my Boot disk on my WHS i only have two backup's showing up! F MY LIFE! Now I tried restoring the boot disk again from backup on the day of the failed disk (24/25th of sept) and it's not showing any disks for restore!

my life has just gone to hell....

BTW your link to youtube didn't work :(

Just to be clear, when you say WinPE, you are referring to the WHS2011 Client Restore Disk, right? (I do know what WinPE is; I just want to make sure we're talking about the same thing).

BTW, when you first started using WHS2011 for this client computer, did you test backing up & restoring your computer before starting to load it up with apps & data?

Hi Ikon,

Yes the recovery client.

No, I didn't unfortunately, i purchased a WHS and built it after I had my machine already running. :(

I believe the restore is corrupt some how, or at least the system reserve. I was able to restore my lenovo's image system recovery. I also get some message about errors when I try to connect to that image now.

Also the last 3 months of backup's are missing since replacing the boot drive! I only see 2 valid backup's instead of a long list that I saw last time I checked the server (before this all happened).

So computer 1 (dertdawg) had 3 physical disks 2x intel 160gig ssd's in raid 0 and a 500gig hitatachi. The secondary disk was just a 500 gig drive where my old windows xp install lived.

I inadvertently wiped, that disk and when trying to restore the Win7 disk/partitions. I've since pulled that disk and am performing a data recovery via NTFS GETDATABACK to delete if I have to.

In the mean time I've placed another disk into dertdawg so I have the two intel's and a 1 TB Seagate, restored the win XP partition via BMR to that drive, however, when I try to boot from that drive many files are missing from the back up like the registry files under c:\winodws\system32\config I'm not sure why this is happening, but when I checked the backup the files are there.

I checked by re-installing windows 7 on the 2x 160's (fresh install) connected via connector and linked this computer again, then viewed the files for backup.

Now I figured Ok i will just restore the files though windows though the desktop app, but when I try to do this when it tries to discover the disk it always errors out stating it lost connection with the server!!?

WTF..!!!!@#!

Ok Summary

-Recovery DB probably corrupt couldn't recover system reserve partition.

-Recovered OS and rebuilt BCD/MBR

-Now unable to boot because it claims the Iastora.sys is corrupt and is bsoding so fast I can't see what BSOD it is. But guessing it's a stop 7 because if the intel iastore is corrupt it can't read the disk.

-Trying to understand how the BMR works. Does it replace the drivers with the ones loaded off the USB when it scans for disks during the recovery if so it could have replaced the drivers and they no longer work

-Not sure why it's corrupt, tried replacing the file from files on another windows 7 machine with intel chipset. Doesn't seem to work.

Not sure what direction to move now, still working on it, will not give up, I WILL not re install. Gonna fix this are resolve it.

SUCCESS!!!

So HAPPY!

Ok here's the rundown of issues / fixes

Issue #1 - WHS boot disk died

-WHS boot disk fail

-Restore WHS/install new disk

issue #2 - BMR restore issue were couldn't boot from

-USB created from dashboard did not work error given during boot 0xc000025

-Created recovery CD from the ISO from MSDN also ripped it to USB, was able to start recovery correctly

Issue #3 - Corrupt DB

-During BMR restore, only 2 backup's listed due to unknown issue guessing corruption in DB

-Restoring OS partition, and Secondary disk successful (wiped secondary disk by accident somewhere along the way)

-Unable to restore "System reserve" 0xc000025 during restore probably due to corrupt database.

Issue #4 - Unable to boot

-System reserve had to be recreated by using bootrec /rebulidos

-Once bootrec fixed my MBR issues, could not boot due to corrupt IaStorA.sys driver

-Booted to recovery console/command prompt replaced the driver with the one form my laptop which was core i7 snadybridge as well, but did not work. Kept BSODing and starting recovery console.

-Obtained intel F6 boot disk driver ripped IaStorA.sys and IaStorV.sys and replaced the drives in the D:\windows\system32\drivers dir

Issue #5 - Secondary drive (winXP) could not boot after recovrey

-Don't know yet, but believed to be MBR issue

Other issues

Wiped, my secondary disk were all the data was stored, not sure if the recovered data form WHS is valid since so not sure of the integrity of my personal data.

BMR is not just re-imaging the disk, WHS replaces some of the drivers, in which case, is why I believe my XP will not boot (since I used 64 bit os recovery and it's 32). On the WIN7 I believe it used updated F6 drivers and replaced the IaStorA.sys with a newer version which does not work or some other issues.

Bottom line, I've had WHS for almost 1.5 years and in that time it has failed me miserably.

Recommendations

-DB integrity checks more regularly

-Access to backed up data though dashboard even if it's not form the computer the backup was created from, so that if BMR does not work you can at least restore parts of data that could be useful, or you can manually restore since the automated system has too many issues to work out still.

-Access to mount and directory manipulate the DAT files some how to extract data if parts of the DB are corrupted if possible.

*Future versions (maybe 2012 essentials) Skydrive integration

I think the worst part of this ordeal other than the time wasted for silly reasons is the fact that MS does not support this product and they push it on the vendors who are utterly useless themselves.

I think i'm going to move to another solution for my backup's since this failure was just too horrendous.

You certainly have had your issues. I'm afraid I cannot relate to your plight because WHS2011 BMR just works for me. Yes, I had to modify my procedure after installing an SSD into my main desktop but, other than that, BMR just simply works.

So, why would any changes have to be made when an SSD is in place?

I think i'm going to run Arcronis backup and recovery with universal recovery. It's pretty freaking awesome, will pretty much sysprep an image so it's stripped of all the disk drivers so you can boot it on any machine and just re-install the drivers if you want. Fully supports UEFI, and will make a WinPE disk or Linux boot disk to connect to the server.

Installing now to test it out...

Why?

I still can't get the connector to re-install on one of my other machines. I uninstalled it because it claimed it was having issues after i updated the server with the UEFI hotfix. Now it just will not install, I spent 2 days going though the logs everything claims it's task manager or .net 4.0 framework.

Re installed .net 4.0 on the machine, no go

Created a test task, worked fine... no go

I'm pretty much so frustrated with WHS I want to take my WHS outside and urinate on the motherboard....
