Schoondoggy confirmed you could do it on a Gen8 http://homeservershow.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5970-hp-ms-g8-b120i-mixing-raid-and-jbod/

I don't know of actual cases of someone doing it on a N54L but I've done something close with 2 VR's in RAID0 and 2 3TB Seagate's in RAID1 http://homeservershow.com/hp-proliant-n40l-microserver-hdmi-video-card-hss-meet-2013.html

Yes, you should be able to have 2 arrays: a 1-drive RAID0 array, and a 2-drive RAID1 array, all on the same controller.

I should be able to have or I will be able to have .... ?

Zenon,

I only have one question in regards to which machine will better suit your purpose.  What is your budget?  If it was ME looking between the two and I had the money I would go with the Gen 8 all day long.

 On the Gen 8

Compute performance  is much greater.  (and the CPU can be upgraded to a XEON on the Gen 8)

It can handle more memory (in supported configurations).

It comes with 2 Network Cards compared to the 1 in the G7

It does NOT come with a OS but a SSD can be added for the OS for about 50.00.

I am sure you have at least lightly reviewed the specs and have seen all the other new options so I will stop there.

The N54L is cheaper and is a VERY CAPABLE little machine.  If money is tight I do not think you will be disappointed at all with it and it should handle all of your needs.  But as I stated above if the difference in price between the Gen 8 & the N54L is not a issue GET THE GEN8.

The money is not the most important criterion.

I only want to have no problem in configuration of my planned home storage/backup system and HTPC.

I totally agree with the following comments concerning HP Microserser GEN8:

To me this looks like two steps forward, two steps back. You gain some features that you could previously add to the last gen version, and you lose some features that make it a great NAS (HD expandability). It has a faster CPU and official support for more RAM making it seem better for virtualization, but it still lacks virtualization features like IOMMU / vt-d pass-through.
The G7 is a great NAS, and the G8 is hoping to be a great virtualization box… but I don’t think it’s quite there yet, hopefully the G9 will be.

Finally I decided to purchase the N54L as a home storage system and HTPC. If there will no problem to put on it ESXi it will be the perfect choice for me.
