Crazy idea - Netbook as a router?

It has a flip up config screen and built in keyboard, great for diagnosing problems when you have no network access. It has its own built in UPS, and its low power.

The only problem is the NIC's. Anyone got an idea to get some good NIC's onto a netbook?

Not a crazy idea at all. I see a lot of people doing it.

I guess that once you figure out everything (hardware and software), the only other thing that you should look after is cooling.

Just out of curiosity do many netbooks have Expresscard slots on them?  I do not own a netbook but the ones I have fixed for folks or have seen did not.  Besides the NIC issue its a great idea!! (how important are NIC's in a router anyhow;)

Personally I wouldn't bother with usb NIC's as pfsense can be pretty picky with support for them. I'd just use a netbook sitting on a managed switch, create VLAN's on the switch and set them up when pfsense asks you if you'd like to use VLANs. Voila, one router with a crapload of NIC's.

The onboard NIC shouldn't struggle at all for normal amounts of traffic.
