Server 2012 Essentials Storage Spaces, Extremely Slow Read Speeds

Everything was running fine for a couple weeks, but then suddenly the performance dropped to an unusable speed.

The read speed start with 70Mb/s then after a few seconds it drop to 300Kb/s and stay there.

Any Suggestion.

I had a Similar experience with Spaces and old/non-server hardware

I had a Core2Quad with 8GB DDR2 and SATAII ports, there is no reason that it should be slow but it just was.

Exept it only went down to like 10Mb/s

Running chkdsk with the proper switches is recommended in this thread;

What does your hardware look like? Drives and controller?

There is no problem with drives or the controller..

It could just be old hardware then, I'm no expert though.

Maybe try FlexRAID or something?

I have a short piece of advice, DONT use storage space yet because its not ready for prime time. Get yourself an inexpensive Raid controller like the RocketRaid 27xx series that a lot of us use and you will be glad you did. Have a look at these two links from pcdoc when he did bench marking on storage spaces and you will see y I am saying this.

http://thedocsworld.net/storage-spaces-server-essentials-rc/

http://thedocsworld.net/server-2012-storage-spaces-testing-the-rtm-version/

Now that said WSE2012 R2 has apparently addressed some of the performance trouble with storage spaces but I cant confirm this because I have not and will not download WSE2012 R2 till its fully released. Others that are testing R2 maybe able to tell you if WSE2012 R2 has better performance of storage spaces. I know Mike aka pcdoc from the BYOB podcast said he wants to retest storage spaces on WSE2012 R2 according to his last podcast, this link to podcast http://homeservershow.com/byob-episode-128.html

So I would wait for his verdict after testing of WSE2012 R2 to see if its ready for prime time now.

Good Luck
