Hello All,

I'm setting up my new Gen8 with the following mods:

Intel Xeon E3-1265LV2

16GB Ram

3TB+ 3x2TB HD

120 GB SSD Kingston V300

Added hardware:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2nd-Hard-Drive-Bay-Caddy-9-5mm-SATA-to-SATA-for-Laptops-/200595602045?ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:US:3160

Added software:

http://www.drivebender.com/

I still need to assemble it all, so no test reports yet, but i know the CPU works.

My question is then:

I have WHS 2011, but can this be installed via HP IP?

Additional: Where can i get a hand on a cheap W2012E license (Genuine and original), as i feel that the +600$ is a bit steep on Amazon.

Cheers

Newegg has it at $395 but I think there are better deals out there -- maybe some others will jump in.................

Still pretty steep, as i can get a WHS 2011 for just 79.37 USD in Denmark where i live.

But thanks for your feedback :)

I think it's highly unlikely you will find a legitimate copy of 2012 essentials for the same price As WHS2011.

You can download the Preview for free at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/windows-server-essentials/windows-server-2012-r2-essentials.aspx

It will be good to January 14th 2014 -- plenty of time to check out and test what it can do on the G8 :)

Any price below $400US is excellent. Any price below $300US can't be legitimate. Watch out for 'Academic' licenses: these are only legal when used by schools, universities, etc.

You have to understand 1 thing. The price for WHS2011 is really, really exceptional. It's cheaper than Win7 or Win8. That's crazy cheap. When we first heard about these prices for WHS2011, none of us could believe it. Do NOT expect to ever find WSE2012 at those prices.

Remember there are a LOT of totally FREE server OS's out there as well.  (running most of the top web business servers)

Ill leave it at that while I implement a plan to quickly pull a blanket over me to block all the rotten tomato's :)

No rotten tomatoes FiLiNuX. I ran various *ix servers over the years; still run Untangle as my UTM. I hoped for years that they would eventually outrun Windows and Mac and become the obvious OS of choice. IMHO, that never happened. They're great in niche situations like a UTM (where I don't have to deal with the 'guts', something I just don't feel like doing any more). Even Untangle could use a good kick in the pants to simplify some of its configuration features, but it's tolerable.

To date, I have not found any client computer backup solution that really compares with WHS/WSE.

Anyway, enuf OT stuff.

Stevns, if you don't want to pay the cost of WSE2012, I see only one thing wrong with using WHS2011: backing up and restoring Win8 devices reliably. Yes, there is a patch for WHS2011 that allows it to back up GPT drives, but I'm not sure I've seen a definitive answer as to whether you can reliably restore any and all Win8 devices from WHS2011. For example, my Surface Pro doesn't seem to like restoring from WHS2011, and I haven't found an article that details how to do it. Other than that, WHS2011, is great.

Since i'm not using the WHS2011 to backup Win8, it should be a safe choice.

Now i just need to test it with HP IP, but that supports W2K8R2, which is basically what WHS2011 is.

Thanks for all the feedback
