schoondoggy 895
hello all, I am also owner of the MicroServer Gen8 my question: Is it possible to replace the ODD with a 2.5 drive what cables do I need? I don't own one yet,,,, but I have reviewed the manuals in preparation. Physically there is room for a SSD, but the cable running up to the bay is a SATA ODD cable which is a different connection than a hard drive. The manual shows a standard SATA connector for the ODD on the motherboard, so you could replace the cable with a standard SATA cable to get data to the SSD. What I don't know is what speed this port runs at? I doubt it is SATA III, it may be SATA II, but it could be SATA I. The old Microserver had plenty of Molex power connectors to tap into to with a 'Y' cord to get power. The manuals don't show any of those, as far as I can see. Can you see any of them on your G8? schoondoggy 895
On the white power connector in the ODD bay, can you see how many wires are on it and what color they are?
schoondoggy 895
In the Maintenance and Service guide on page 75 it shows a separation point in the power cable for the drive bays. If this is a standard Molex power connector you should be able to insert a 'Y' cord to get a SATA power connection. You should look in the BIOS to see if they give any speed options for that SATA port on the motherboard,
ikon 439
That looks like a 3.5" floppy drive power connector.
Pancakes 11
That looks like a 3.5" floppy drive power connector. Yeah D: You could always cut it off and attach a molex. It should be fine for just a SATA drive Edited July 27, 2013 by Pancakes
ikon 439
Some splicing, soldering, and heat shrinking Does anyone make a floppy <-> Molex power connector adapter? Don't think I've ever seen one.
Pancakes 11
I can't find it the right way round, I guess not many people have floppy connections anymore http://www.ebay.com/itm/1pc-5-25-Molex-to-3-25-Floppy-PC-Laptop-Power-Cable-CSB-/290575867858?pt=US_Power_Cables_Connectors&hash=item43a7abdfd2 There is this, but I cant really tell if thats a standard floppy connector http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-OEM-Dell-MX714-Floppy-FDD-to-Sata-Power-Converter-Cable-/400298253923?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d33a29e63 http://i.imgur.com/KYJ9Lkv.jpg http://www.redplanettrading.com/ebay/cables/mx714/mx714-overview.jpg
ikon 439
That does look like the right thing, except of course that it's a SATA connector instead of a Molex, but that may well be exactly what's needed.
