Great deal. These are the best home NAS drives yet. As long as they come from a good batch.

I thought bad ones came from poor packaging for shipping? Are these better than the new seagate nas drives?

I'm not sure anyone knows exactly what is causing a few Red drives to be DOA or shortly after being put into service.

Good point. I have had 8 in a RAID6 array for nearly a year now and have been fine. Must have been one of the fortunate ones.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just received a WD20EFRX as a replacement for a dead WD20EARS. I was pretty happy about that.

Then I checked.

14% | 22% | 27%

Those are the percentages of reviews reporting failed Red drives on Newegg, 1TB, 2TB, and 3TB respectively.

These are rather high figures. I now find myself hoping that the drive came from a 'good batch'. :P

Is it ironic or what that drives touted as specifically designed for reliability and endurance have such a high failure rate? And it's not just DOAs, but those that last a few months before failing.

I have found Reds to be very reliable.

Heat and handling are the biggest killers of drives.

Through helping friends build their own computers, I have come to the conclusion that the average consumer is not very careful with drive handling.

Probably not. I suppose a spate of mishandlers could be the primary cause of the excessive number of failures. Time will tell. :D
